International Study & Work

International Education

Approximately 40% of Amherst students choose to study abroad during their degree studies. Opportunities now exist in nearly 50 countries. While most students who study abroad do so in their junior year, it is never too early to explore how overseas study can be integrated into one's academic studies and career planning. The process of preparing to study abroad, however, usually starts during the sophomore year, when students are asked first to decide upon a major and then to indicate a formal intent to study abroad. All students should attend a Steps to Study Abroad Meeting, explore the resources in the Study Abroad Library, consult with their academic advisor, and make an appointment with Dean Janna Behrens, Director of International Experience. Check out the Bulletin Board for upcoming meetings and events concerning overseas study.

You will need the following three forms in order to study abroad. This page describes them more fully:

Declaration of Intent to Study Abroad online form
Confirmation of Study Abroad and Travel Waiver of Liability Agreement form

The Study Abroad Office and Library are located in the Career Center, College Hall, First Floor, Amherst College, Amherst, MA 01002. Phone: (413) 542-2265. Fax: (413) 542-5790. To make an appointment with Dean Behrens, stop by the Front Desk or call x2265.

Glimpse Magazine is an online and print resource that promotes cross-cultural understanding and exchange. There are articles, forums, and photo essays by young adults living and studying abroad. Reading about study abroad experiences by students like yourself may help you decide if it is the right experience for you during your college years. "It's Your World. Get Acquainted."
