Amherst College Student Health Service
Location: Keefe Health Center building, 95 College St.,
just east of Moore House. PhilosophyWe are committed to promoting health and preventing or treating disease and illness, in a caring, confidential and competent manner, including direct patient care and health education, for all Amherst College students. We encourage students to be active participants in their health care. Manner of ServicesAppointments are available with all of our practitioners, usually within 24 hours of request. Appointments are most appropriate for anticipated health needs, either of a routine nature (gynecologic care, routine medical exams, completion of forms, immunization shots, allergy shots, etc.) or episodic needs (headache, infections, injuries, consultations, etc.). With an appointment you may choose your practitioner, and are likely to spend less time in the waiting room. Walk-in hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Such visits are most appropriate for more acute needs, usually of less than 24-hour duration, and are expected to require no more than about 20 minutes. Because of unpredictable use, time spent in the waiting room usually is longer than for an appointment, so bring a book if you like, or peruse our magazine selection. Please understand that "emergencies" will be given priority regardless of arrival time. Urgent care needs are seen at Keefe at any time we are open; a call ahead to x2267 will expedite your care. Payment for ServicesAll Amherst students have prepaid for care at Keefe through the
payment of tuition. There is a copayment for medicines and some appliances (splints,
etc.). Most care off campus is paid for by the "supplemental" insurance
that Massachusetts requires all students to have. This can be your own insurance
from home, or the one offered by the college. Let us know if you have questions.
