Subject: Veggie Meeting Report

Hey there everyone,

We had a great turnout at our first meeting on Tuesday- about 25 of us were there, to discuss the semester's plans for the club and to laugh and the disastrous brownie brick (which was, we stress again, a result of B.R.'s incompetence, not a result of its vegan-ness :) ). To those of you who were there, thank you very much for coming, and we promise we'll make the food thing up to you in the future. Those of you who couldn't make it but who e-mailed us to let us know, thanks a lot. We'll try to schedule our next meeting at a time that's more convenient for everyone.

So here's the low-down on what was discussed.

We have five projects to work on this semester:

1. Education: Running tables with information on Vegetarianism in the Campus Center and Valentine periodically.

2. Speakers/Workshops: Bringing a speaker or someone similar onto campus to speak about or to run a discussion or workshop on some issue surrounding vegetarianism. One suggestion is to bring in a nutritionist who specializes in vegetarian eating to meet with any interested students.

3. Group Dinners: Organizing and cooking one or two Vegetarian dinners to which anyone on campus (limited to a sign-up) would invited. It was suggested that we might try to work with the cooking club on this project.

4. Booklet: Creating a booklet with information about restaurants in the 5-college area- which ones have vegetarian/vegan options, which ones have ingredients available on request, etc. Hopefully this project will involve not only informing the public, but also informing the restaurants about how they can be more veggie-friendly.

5. Working with Valentine to provide more information about the food that is served, and t provide more quantity of better quality veggie options.

6. Create a project! Take that initiative! We'll help with funding and anything else you need!

We decided that the most effective way to try to get all of these things done is to have whoever is interested please volunteer to take part in whatever project they feel most excited about. If you only have a limited amount of time to dedicate to a project, that's fine. If you would prefer to dedicate a little bit of time to several projects, that's even better. And if you're feeling ambitious and want to take on a leadership role to really make one of the projects happen, then you're our hero(ine). Please e-mail us back or talk to us about what you might wish to help out with- this is a young club and this is your chance to really step up and make a difference, so we urge you to do so!

As for our next meeting- it was suggested that we make it a dinner meeting, although there are some problems with that as we could not very well hold it at Valentine without excluding those who live or eat off-campus. Let us know if you have suggestions, and we'll get back to you with a time and place for our next gathering. This time the food will be good.

One final note- we are making an effort to have vegan baked goods available at the Hungry Newt Coffeehouse (don't know what it is? ) as many nights as we can. Currently you can be pretty sure that a vegan option will be available Wednesday nights, and we hope to increase the number of nights per week that vegan stuff is available as time goes on.

Thanks everyone for your support of the club. Please do e-mail us back and let us know what you'd like to get involved in- don't hesitate! Hit that "respond" key now!

take care,
