Collecting Contest
The Frederick S. Lane '36
Student Book Collecting Competition for the year 2007
- The Frederick S. Lane '36 Prize for Excellence in Book Collecting: $300
- First Prize $225
- Second Prize $150
- Third Prize $75
The Lane Prize for Excellence has been established to be awarded to a student showing considerable experience, knowledge, and ability in the field of book collecting. The First, Second, and Third prizes are to be awarded to students showing strong interests in book collecting and presenting good beginning collections. (Note: Prior to 1999, the Prize for Excellence was known as the Van Nostrand Prize.)
Rules for Entry
- The competition is open to all undergraduate students enrolled at
Amherst College on the date entries close.
- The collection must be based on some unifying principle, such as subject,
a single author or group of authors, or place or genre of publication.
The collection may not have been previously submitted in the competition.
- To enter, each contestant must submit the following:
- The collection (the physical volumes must be submitted).
- A brief annotated listing of the collection.
- A brief statement describing the background and development of
the collection.
- A list of ten titles the contestant would like to add to the collection,
with a statement of the reason for adding each item.
- The collection (the physical volumes must be submitted).
- Entries should be left at the Archives and Special Collections Department
on Level A of the Robert Frost Library. Entries must be received by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2007. Any questions about the competition may be addressed to the

).
- The essays and lists submitted with prize-winning entries from previous
years are available for consultation in the Higgins Room (Archives and
Special Collections Department), where a selection of books about book
collecting is also on hand.
- Collections will remain in the Archives and Special Collections Department
to be judged. Entrants will be notified when the books may be picked
up after judging (normally in late March). Winners will be asked to
lend selected books for display during April.
- The names of prize winners will be reported to the Council of the Friends of the Amherst College Library at their Spring meeting. Prizes will be awarded at the College Meeting on May 9, 2007 (or, for seniors, at Senior Assembly on May 11).
