1. What is AMHrefchat?

AMHrefchat is is AMHerst College REFerence chat , a new chat service which offers real-time reference assistance using AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo Messenger , MSN Messenger , ICQ or Trillian .

2. What do I need to do to get started?
If you already have an account with AOL, Yahoo, MSN or Trillian instant messenger services, add our screenname - AMHrefchat . [For MSN you may need to select the option of sending an email when you add AMHrefchat.]

If you are new to instant messenging, you will need to register for an account and screenname and either download free software or use a web-based version.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) ( or AIM Express , which requires no download)
Add AMHrefchat to your Buddy List: Double click on AMHrefchat to send a message to reference staff.

ICQ Add AMHrefchat or 362472899 to your contact list: Double click on AMHrefchat or 362472899 to send a message to reference staff.

MSN Messenger (no web version available)
Add AMHrefchat@hotmail.com to your Contact List: Double click on AMHrefchat to send a message to reference staff.
[For MSN you may need to select the option of sending an email when you add AMHrefchat.]

Yahoo Messenger (or Yahoo Web Messenger , which requires no download)
Add AMHrefchat to your Friend List: Double click on AMHrefchat to send a message to reference staff.

Trillian (connect to multiple chat programs)
Add AMHrefchat to your Contact List: Double click on AMHrefchat to send a message to reference staff.

3. When is the AMHrefchat service available?
The service is available whenever the reference desk is open. Regular hours during the academic year are: Monday - Thursday , 9am-9pm; Friday , 9am-4:30pm; Saturday , CLOSED; Sunday , 2pm-5pm & 6pm-9pm.

4. Who can use AMHrefchat?
Our intended audience for this service is Amherst students, faculty and staff.

5. What is the library's privacy policy?
AMHrefchat sessions will be saved for training and statistic purposes; however, identifying information about the user will be deleted.

6. What kinds of questions may I ask?
The service is intended to offer brief reference assistance. Those seeking more extensive research assistance will be urged to make a research consultation appointment with a librarian.

7. Where do I go to offer feedback on the service?
Please send feedback to library@amherst.edu .

8. How do I begin a AMHrefchat session?
Add our screenname, AMHrefchat , to your AOL, Yahoo, MSN, or Trillian contacts; Double-click on our screenname, OR type our screenname in the To: box of any of the programs.

9. What can I do to get assistance if AMHrefchat is unavailable?
