Mission Statement of the Amherst College Library

In support of the College’s mission to educate students in seeking, valuing, and advancing knowledge, the Library provides resources and services to sharpen student intellect, encourage students to question accepted ideas, and instill a love of learning and the habits that enact it.

The Library serves the students, faculty, administration, and staff with resources that promote excellence in teaching, research, and learning.  Its collections, organization, facilities, and instructional offerings support the undergraduate curriculum and faculty research in a welcoming environment of free discovery and mutual respect, with a commitment to diverse perspectives.

The Library is dedicated to the advancement and preservation of knowledge.  Library staff with a wide range of education and experience build, preserve, and provide access to collections in traditional and new formats.  They provide guidance in locating and evaluating resources in any form.

The Library creates partnerships on campus, in the Five College area, and beyond in order to enhance its services and to participate in the larger community.  The Library engages the community by participating in and sponsoring campus and community activities, programs, and events.
