September 19, 2005

Amherst, MA - The Amherst College men's soccer team topped visiting non-conference foe MIT on Monday, 2-1. The Jeffs dominated play, outshooting MIT 28-5 and improving to 3-0-1, while the Engineers dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

Amherst gained the early advantage as sophomore Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) punched a header just inside the right post off a long free kick from senior co-captain Ben Lavely (New Orleans, LA) at the 6:27-mark. Amherst rookie Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) stretched the lead to 2-0 just under a minute later, converting a crossing pass from senior Christian Alexander (Santa Fe, NM) for his second goal of the season. MIT answered at the 38:15-mark as junior Dylan Wright (Eureka, CA) picked up a short Amherst clear and fed senior Walter Song (Carrollton, TX) on the far post for the score.

The Amherst offense peppered MIT first-year goalkeeper Thomas Caldwell (East Berlin, PA) with shots throughout the game, but he managed to come up with nine saves, including a pair of key stops on blasts from Lynch and senior Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) . Amherst senior goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) needed only one save to earn his third win of the year.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at NESCAC rival Tufts University.
