Jeffs Battle Salve Regina to 0-0 Double-Overtime Stalemate September 25, 2005 Amherst wasted no time attacking, peppering Salve Regina junior goalkeeper Davin Sirpenski (Voluntown, CT) with seven first-half shots on goal, all of which he saved. The Jeff offense kept the pressure on after the break, loosing 15 more blasts towards the net, but most sailed high or wide and the game headed for extra sessions. The Jeffs appeared to end the game in the closing seconds of the first overtime as junior forward Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) beat the Seahawk defense to a long pass and outjumped Sirpenski to the high bounce to send a header home for the score. However, the play was blown dead and the goal waved off by the lead official, citing Wohl for a controversial foul and the game continued into a second overtime. Wohl and rookie teammate Jacob Duker (Newton, MA) both had near-scores in the final session, but neither could convert and play ended in a stalemate. Amherst rookie goalie Jeff Grover (Framingham, MA) posted a shutout in his first career start in goal, nabbing five saves, while Sirpenski finished with 14 saves for Salve Regina, which moved to 5-3-3. Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. at non-conference opponent Springfield College.Box Score |
