Amherst's Wohl, Gannon, Alexander Nab Men's Soccer All-NESCAC Honors

November 10, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College junior Michael Wohl (Northampton, MA) and seniors Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) and Christian Alexander (Santa Fe, NM) were all named to the 2005 NESCAC Men's Soccer All-Conference team on Thursday. Wohl was the team's lone first-team honoree, while Gannon and Alexander earned second-team plaudits.

Wohl claims first-team honors for the second consecutive season after leading the team and finishing eighth in the NESCAC with seven goals, all of which came in conference play. He also tied for ninth in the NESCAC with 14 points. Wohl caught fire late in the season, notching a hat trick, including the game-winner, in a 4-3 win at Colby, and tallying both goals in Amherst's dramatic 2-1 victory over visiting Middlebury. He tied for the conference lead with 10 goals as a sophomore and finished second in points (23), and racked up six goals and two assists to tie for 12th in the NESCAC with 14 points as a rookie.

Gannon takes home second-team recognition for the second straight year, finishing the season with 11 points on four goals and three assists. He was also strong down the stretch, scoring both goals in the Jeffs' 2-1 double-overtime thriller over Bates in the opening round of the NESCAC Tournament, and dealing the game-winning assist in their 1-0 NESCAC Tournament Semifinal win over Middlebury. As a junior, he paced the conference with eight assists and added five goals to tie for fourth in the NESCAC with 18 points. Gannon was also named the 2002 NESCAC Rookie of the Year.

Alexander collects all-conference plaudits for the first time in his career after an outstanding defensive season. He spent the majority of his time at defense or in the midfield, often helping the team control tempo and possession. He and the Jeff defense posted four shutouts on the year, held opponents to 10.1 shots per game and allowed only 4.8 shots on goal per game. He also dished out the game-winning assist in a 2-1 victory over MIT.

The Jeffs reached the NESCAC Tournament Championship game for the first time since 2002 and finished with a 9-5-3 mark this fall.
