19th-Ranked Jeffs Remain Undefeated in NESCAC Play with
3-2 Victory at Bates
September 17, 2005
LEWISTON, ME - The 19th-ranked Amherst College
women's soccer team improved to 2-0-1 (2-0-0 NESCAC) with a 3-2 victory
at conference rival Bates College on Saturday. Junior forward Amy Armstrong (Avon,
CT) had a hand in all three Amherst scores, punching in one
herself and assisting on two others to lead the Jeffs.
Armstrong found rookie Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, VA) for
her second goal of the season to give Amherst a 1-0 edge at the 20:27-mark
and the Jeffs carried the slight edge into halftime. Bates junior Meg
Coffin (Westford, MA) evened the count 15 minutes into the
second frame, but Armstrong regained the lead off a feed from sophomore Heather
Nowak (New Haven, CT) just eight minutes later. Armstrong returned
the favor four minutes later, dishing to Nowak for the eventual game-winner.
Sophomore Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, MA) pulled Bates
within one at the 74:33-mark, but the Bobcats would get no closer as
they fell to 1-1 (0-1 NESCAC) with the loss.
Amherst junior netminder Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) grabbed six
saves, while Bates counterpart Nini Spalding (San Francisco, CA) was
credited with seven saves.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-conference
foe Springfield College.
