December 2 , 2006

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Amherst College swimming and diving teams split their meets at Middlebury College Saturday with the women coming out on top, 162-136, and the men falling 163-135.

Juniors Julie Kim (Montville, NJ)) and Brittany Sasser (Belmont, MA) led the charge for the women’s team throughout this closely fought win. Kim took first in the 1000 and 500 freestyle events, in addition to leading off for the winning 400 freestyle relay which also included junior Lisa Pritchard (Saratoga Springs, NY), and sophomores Erin Morrison (Old Greenwich, CT) and Meaghan Stern (Albuquerque, NM). Sasser demonstrated her incredible versatility with wins in the 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 IM in addition to her pool record setting split in the 50 backstroke to lead off the winning 200 Medley Relay. In total, the women took first in 10 of the 16 events to move to 3-0.

Despite losing the 200 medley relay, the Amherst men began their meet strongly behind wins by sophomore Christian Witzke (Jacksonville, FL) in the 1000 freestyle and junior Andrew Maslan (Mission Hills, KS) in the 200 freestyle. Freshman sprinter Tad Homchick (Mercer Island, WA) attempted to spark the life back into the Amherst swimmers after Middlebury dominated the stroke events with wins in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events. Homchick efforts were also the catalyst in Amherst's winning 400 freestyle relay performance.. However the team was not able to hold off the Panthers' force, and fell to 2-1 with the loss.

In the diving competition, sophomore Sabrina Dorman (Chevy Chase, MD) took a pair of third place finishes for the women. On the men’s side, junior Connor Boyd (Northridge, CA) captured two second place finishes while Adam Bookman (Chevy Chase, MD) finished with a third and a fourth in the three meter and one meter events respectively.

Both teams return to action January 6, 2007 at NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College at 1:00 p.m.
