Candidate Statements
PRESIDENT
Richa Bhala 07
· This will not go on my résumé. My name is Richa Bhala, and I am running for AAS President. (http://www.amherst.edu/~rsbhala)
T-“Avi”-Rex Das 07
· After escaping my paddock behind Tony Marx's house I have decided to run for President. I have a mastery of Roberts Rules of order and impeccable manners. I will eat up the competition!!!
Charmel Maynard 07
· My name is Charmel Maynard. I sat on the senate this last year, and learned what we can realistically achieve within the AAS. As president, one of my issues would be improving the cumbersome pre-registration process. I believe there are more efficient ways such as online signatures from professors that would make it easier. In addition, I hope to bring improvements to athletic life, not just varsity sports, but better support for, intramural, recreational, and club sports. I will not promise to get extended hours at Valentine, but I will promise to continue fighting for better student life at Amherst.
Ashley Rose 07
· After being on the senate for a year I have come to realize that the senate's biggest problems are that it takes itself way to seriously and that it is totally out of touch with the student body. It spends hours upon hours arguing over money, precedents and constitutionality when it should be coming up with ways to make life better on campus. There is a lack of communication between the senate and the students that prevents us from actually helping the students efficiently. As president I will continue to work on increasing communication between my constituency and the senate.
Bill Taylor 09
· I love Amherst. We have a beautiful community here, and working together we can make it even better. I will be a down-to-earth President who will be accessible to upperclassmen and new students alike. With more campus-wide events and a President who communicates well with students, we can build on the vibrancy and friendliness of the student body. Vote Bill Taylor for President: a fresh face and some new ideas!
VICE PRESIDENT
Andrea Gyorody 07
· The Vice President presides over Senate meetings. Having been a senator for a year, I know it’s not a gigantic responsibility of import, but a good VP can keep the Senate in check simply by being observant and willing to move meetings along. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but some (not all) of the recent mess could have been handled by a more active VP. With less bureaucratic bullshit, perhaps the Senate can do something productive.
JUDICARY COUNCIL CHAIR
John Ancona 07
· The biggest problem the AAS faces is student apathy. As a rising senior who has never before served in the AAS, I can bring a fresh perspective to the JC. As someone apart from the AAS culture, I would fulfill the JC's role as a check and balance on the AAS. With my experience of the JC through club recognition and review as well as closely following the AAS' weekly meetings, I feel confident that I could lead the JC effectively. I appreciate your support.
Kevin Nattinger 08
· I am currently serving in the position of Judiciary Council Chair, and would like to continue in this position. The past semester has been a busy one for the JC, and I have kept the JC on top of everything. I now have experience with nearly every constitutional duty of the JC chair. I hope to continue making the JC a useful and efficient part of the Association of Amherst Students. See my website at http://www.amherst.edu/~knattinger08/jc.
TREASUER
Samantha Siegal 08
· I’m running for Treasurer to both sustain the current quality of our financial maintenance and to reevaluate the process. Experiences this year have shown that, at times, there is a breakdown of understanding between the AAS and the student body at large. Therefore, I wish to communicate and streamline procedures even more than the processes currently allow, as well as revisit the guidelines under which money is allocated. I hope that doing so can help the student body come that much closer to seeing the AAS as an entity that works for them in a manner they are proud of.
