Christian Peace Witness for Iraq

Four years ago, as the buildup to war with Iraq heightened, 3,500 people attended a service hosted by Sojourners in the Washington National Cathedral and marched to the White House. Now, four years later, thousands of lives have been lost, billions of dollars have been wasted, and all of us have been diminished in the midst of so much destruction and heartache. On March 16, 2007, thousands of Christians will gather - in Washington, D.C., and at local vigils across the country - for the Christian Peace Witness for Iraq. We must reclaim the hope that stands at the center of our faith and declare, "Enough! The war must end."

Please join Jim Wallis and other national faith leaders at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 16 , for worship at the National Cathedral, followed by a march and late-night vigil at the White House. United by the cross, thousands are expected to join us in Washington, D.C., as we call for the real support of our troops through an end to the U.S. occupation and phased withdrawal, the total rejection of torture, and an international commitment to the physical and human reconstruction so desperately needed in Iraq. Your participation in the events in Washington, and across the U.S., will send a message to our leaders and the world that peace and reconciliation stand at the very heart of the Christian message and our respective traditions.

Seating at the National Cathedral is limited, so registration is very important. Printed registration receipts will serve as your "ticket" to the worship service at the Cathedral. In addition, you may register online for denominational gatherings and nonviolence training. Please see the logistics portion of the Christian Peace Witness Web site for more information about ride-sharing and transportation options from across the country.

Click here to host a peace vigil in your hometown or city!

If you can't make it to Washington that weekend, there are still ways to make your voice heard. Consider hosting a local vigil and inviting others in your city or town to join you. Registering your event on the Christian Peace Witness for Iraq Web site is easy, and you'll find a downloadable toolkit to help you plan your event.

The Christian Peace Witness for Iraq provides the Christian community an opportunity to reclaim our prophetic voice for peace. Please join us in Washington, D.C., on March 16 as we commemorate this tragic fourth anniversary with prayer and actions for peace.

Ripple Effect Program

Dear all, I'm sending this appeal rather widely to get a sense of how many are interested the the Urbana onward conference explained below. It is open to any who went to Urbana this year or to any of the previous Urbanas. Where do we go from here. This is being sponsored by InterServe and (unless otherwise noted) will be held in the Back Sanctuary at College Church from 9:30-12:30 on February 24. If the response is minimal we will hope the conference at my house at 30 Chapel Road, Amherst. Please let me know if you are interested. Dr. Don (Lundgren)

Sandy Hill Camp

Sandy Hill Camp is awesome--216 acres on the Chesapeake Bay with horses, waterskiing, sailing, a ropes course, a climbing wall and zipline, a variety of sports and the creative arts, skits, a swimming pool, mountain biking, archery, and more!!!  Our camp is for boys and girls ages 8 to 16 who come from all over the world and are of various religious backgrounds.  We are looking for staff that love kids, enjoy the outdoors and want to be positive Christian role models for kids.  Skills in activity areas are a bonus but not required-- sailing, driving speedboats, lifeguarding, rock climbing, teaching sports, the creative arts, horseback riding, store managing, food service and nursing.

Pay for the summer is $2200 plus free room and board and training for waterfront, ropes, equestrian and medical staff.  Our staff has most of their weekends off, which is quite unique for a residential camp.  We sponsor staff trips on many of their weekends off to places like NYC, Washington DC, Baltimore, the beach and more.  Dates required are from June 8th to either August 10th or August 17th, 2007.  The start date is May 31st for special training for lifeguards/waterfront, equestrian and ropes course staff.  There is also a great international flavor to the camp as nearly one-third of our staff come from outside of the US.  Our staff work very hard, but have an awesome and rewarding summer positively impacting the lives of kids.

We would really appreciate it if you could forward this e-mail to your IV students and make an announcement at large group letting them know about this opportunity.  Although our staff is made up of students of all majors, students in education, nursing, sports/recreation and the humanities find the experience particularly relevant to their majors.  Students on sailing and equestrian teams and those involved in outdoor clubs often find working at camp especially appealing too.  Interested students should visit our website at www.SandyHillCamp.com for more information and to apply online.

Camp Joy/Camp Hope in Carmel, NY (Children's Bible Fellowship of NY)

CBF runs two summer camps on our property in Putnam County, NY about 50 miles north of Yankee Stadium: Camp Joy for urban children and teens, and Camp Hope for children and adults with disabilities. Our goal is to "Make disciples of NYCs Forgotten Fields." Each year we seek godly, Christian young adults to serve as camp counselors and other positions. I saw your name on the school website, and wondered whether some of the Christian students at Amherst would be interested in participating in this ministry. God truly uses summer camp experiences in the lives of both the campers and the staff.
