Bike Patrol

Amherst College police officers have been patrolling the campus, lots, bike paths and surrounding wooded areas on mountain bicycles since 1994. In 2005 the police added a Yamaha Majesty to the patrol fleet.

The officers are easily identified as police officers with blue shorts or training pants and white long and short sleeve polo shirts. The polo shirts have an embroidered badge and the words "Amherst College Police" on the left breast and the department patch on the sleeve.

In cooler weather, the officers are assigned highly visible blue and white patrol jackets with Campus Police in large letters on the back. The uniform has become so popular with the officers and community that we are now issuing it to many officers for community policing activities.

The bicycles are black with white police lettering and are equipped with nightime lighting and a rack to carry equipment. The Yamaha Majesty is white with blue lettering and is equipped with emergency lighting.

The Bike Patrol has proven to be highly beneficial to interaction between the officers and the community. The officers ride as weather allows from March until late November
