Loft Policy

Prior to the construction of lofts and bunks, a hard copy of the loft plan should be submitted to the Chief of Campus Police who serves as the College Fire Marshal. Construction may begin as soon as the plan is approved. Upon completion of construction, the Chief of Campus Police must be notified so the loft can be inspected for conformity to the plan.

The following regulations are in effect, will NOT be waived, and should be incorporated into the plan:

  1. Must not violate provisions of a Massachusetts Building Code or State Fire and Health regulations.
  2. Must be free-standing and not attached to the walls, floor, or ceiling.
  3. Sleeping surface must be at least four feet beneath the ceiling.
  4. May have no more than two sides enclosed (i.e. by a wall or partition) and may not exceed 30 % of the floor square footage.
  5. Must be built of construction grade lumber and/or fire resistant materials.
  6. Must not block or obstruct windows, doors, smoke detectors, network outlets or emergency exits in any manner.
Electrical wiring of lamps must not be attached to, touching, or hung from the loft/bunk.
  7. No flammable decorations are to be hung or draped from the loft/bunk.
  8. Must be removed by the last day of spring semester classes or the College will remove it at the owner's expense.
Minimum charge for loft removal will be $ 50.
  9. The owner will be responsible for any damage caused by the loft/bunk.

The College may remove, at the owner's expense, any loft or bunk that fails to comply with the above regulations, or for which approval has not been obtained.
