Purpose: Churchill
Scholarships offer American students
of exceptional ability
the opportunity to pursue graduate
studies in engineering, mathematics
and the sciences at the University
of Cambridge. The Scholarships
also provide the opportunity
to experience life in Britain.
Eligibility: Applicants must
be citizens of the United States.
Before enrolling at Cambridge, one
must be between the ages of 19 and 26, hold
a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from
a United States college or university,
and may not have attained a doctorate.
Applicants must demonstrate:
- high achievement
in academic work as indicated
by course grades and scores
on the Graduate Record Examination
(GRE)
- capacity
for original, creative work
as shown by special recognition
and letters of reference
- demonstrated leadership
- concern
for the critical problems
of society
- good health.
Award amount and conditions: All
tuition and fees to attend the
University of Cambridge. In addition,
students receive a living allowance of £6,500
if enrolled in a nine-month academic program
and £7,500 if enrolled in a full-year
academic program. They also receive a travel
allowance of $500. Married students who are
accompanied by their spouses receive an additional
allowance of £555.
Except for reasons of health or other emergency,
a Churchill Scholar makes a commitment
to complete the program and requirements
of study for which he or she
is admitted.
Failure to fulfill this commitment
will require the refund of funds
expended on the student's behalf.
Also, two narrative reports describing the
Cambridge experience are required, one in January
and the second upon completion of the academic
program. Number offered: At least 11
per year. Amherst can nominate
2 candidates.
Deadline: Preliminary applications
are due in the Office of Fellowships in mid December.
