Luce

Purpose: The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends and internships for fifteen young Americans to live and work in Asia each year. Dating from 1974, the program's purpose is to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society.

Eligibility: Those who already have significant experience in Asia or Asian studies are not eligible for the Luce Scholars Program. Candidates must be American citizens who have received at least a bachelors degree and have not reached their 29th birthday by September 1 of the year they enter the program. Nominees should have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment.

Award amount and conditions: Job placement and housing in Asia as well as basic stipends.

Number offered: 15 scholars per year. Amherst can nominate either 2 and 3 candidates, depending on the year.

Deadline: Preliminary applications are due in the Office of Fellowships in late October.

Application materials: Preliminary application forms are available in the Office of Fellowships 213 Converse Hall.
