Purpose: An
award by the British government
as a means of expressing appreciation of
the aid given to the British by the United
States under the Marshall Plan. The award
funds study of a US citizen at a British
University for two years. These scholars
are seen as potential leaders
and decision-makers in the US.
This award gives scholars a first-hand
opportunity to gain a lasting understanding
and appreciation of British values and
way of life. It also serves to strengthen
the enduring relationship between the US
and the UK.
Eligibility: Open only to
United States citizens who (at
the time they take up their Scholarship)
hold a first degree from an accredited
four-year college or university
in the United States with a minimum
GPA of 3.7 and must apply within
two years of graduating from
their undergraduate college or
university. Marshall Scholars
are required to take a degree at a British university.
They are also expected to spend some of their
vacation time in the United Kingdom. Minimum
qualification for application is an A- (or 3.7
on a 4.0 scale).
Persons already studying for or holding a British
degree or degree-equivalent qualification are
not eligible to apply for a Marshall Scholarship.
Award amount and conditions: Tuition,
fees, residence and related costs and transportation
to and from Britain are paid in four installments
during the academic year (approximately $20,000
annually) for two years. There is the possibility
of an extension into a third year.
Number offered: 40 per year.
