Newhouse Fellow
Program
This 30-month program provides for 18 months of graduate study leading to master's
degree at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, internships and a post-grad
professional apprenticeship. Open to under-represented groups as defined by

Asian
American Journalists Association
Offers scholarships to outstanding high school seniors and undergraduate and
graduate students. Students are selected based on the following criteria 1)
commitment to the field of journalism; 2) sensitivity to Asian American issues
as demonstrated by community involvement; 3) journalistic ability; and, 4)
financial need.

National
Association of Black Journalists
Annually awards a minimum of ten $2,500 scholarships to African American college
students who are planning to pursue a career in journalism. Any foreign or
US student currently attending an accredited four-year college or university
may apply. Recipients also receive an all-expense-paid trip to the NABJ convention
and are required to participate in student convention projects.

Association of Hispanic Journalists
Provides several different scholarship opportunities for college undergraduates
and graduates who are pursuing careers in print or broadcast journalism. Awards
range from $1,000 - $5,000.

Howard Simons
Graduate Fellowship
The Howard Simons Graduate Fellowship at the University of Maryland was created
to expand opportunities for minority journalists in the newspaper industry.
It's a 12-month masters program in public affairs reporting, and the fellowship
covers tuition, fees plus a stipend of approximately $11,000 for living expenses.

The American Prospect Writing Fellowship
The American Prospect is a national, bimonthly magazine that focuses on politics,
policy and culture. The magazine offers six yearlong grants of $20,000 each
to writers under 30 who exhibit the drive and motivation to become critical
journalists and public intellectuals. Throughout the year, participants will
create two to four articles for The American Prospect and two to four articles
for other national magazines.

The Hearst Broadcast News Fellowship
Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. conducts an on-the-job training program in broadcast
journalism for those who are minorities or disadvantaged and who are minorities
who have encountered substantial difficulties in gaining access to broadcast
careers as a result. Applicants must have at least a BA or BS degree and proven
interest in broadcast journalism. A transcript and three letters of recommendation
are required as well as a statement detailing why the applicant chose to pursue
broadcast journalism and why they deserve the fellowship. If interested, contact

Pulliam Journalism Fellowships
Fellows will work as reporters, editorial writers or copy editors, depending
on their areas of interest and experience at The Indianapolis Star or The Arizona
Republic. A cash grant and a stipend are for $6,000. Those eligible for the
fellowship hold a bachelor's degree and are newspaper journalism majors or
liberal arts majors with newspaper experience.

Poynter Institute News Reporting & Writing Fellowship
This summer program (June-July) offers unparalleled opportunity for learning
and growth for those graduating seniors or recent college graduates who see
their future in journalism. Located in St. Petersburg, FL, tuition is waived
and living expenses covered by $1,950 fellowship. During the program, students
will learn to originate stories in a town they barely know, to sell stories
to editors, and to gather and convey information in a hurry. See the web page

The Nation Internships
The Nation Internship offers college students and recent graduates, interested
in magazine journalism and publishing, an opportunity to gain practical editorial
experience and comprehensive exposure to the publishing aspect of the magazine's
production. Interns attend bi-weekly seminars to meet and learn from genuine
authors, journalists and politians. Internships are offered during the summer
and academic year, and carry a small stipend. Majority of the internships are
held in New York. However, there is one opportunity available in Washington
D.C. All ages are welcome, yet most interns have completed their junior year
of college.

The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer - Desk Assistant
Program
An entry-level program designed for recent college graduates seeking practical
experience at a nightly national news organization. This position is divided
into five rotations among the different units that comprise the NewsHour: newsdesk;
wires; research; setup unit; and viewer mail. Seven desk assistants are accepted
twice a year; the position runs approximately 6 months.

Offered by WCVB-TV CHannel 5, Boston, in conjunction with the Hearst Corporation.
Aspiring broadcast reporters are paid approximately $18,000 for a nine-month
internship. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree and a proven interest
in broadcast journalism; in particular, the program aims to reach minority
candidates or others disadvantaged by economic
and social conditions who might otherwise have difficult access to the field.
