Amherst College Public School Teaching Fellowships--deadline May 7, 2007

Amherst College is pleased to offer students from the Class of 2007 the opportunity to apply for an Amherst College Public School Teaching Fellowship.

Class of ’54 Commitment To Teaching Fellowship
Amherst is proud of its recent graduates who have chosen to teach in urban and other school systems where students may be considered “at risk” or are socio-economically disadvantaged.  Through the generosity of the Class of 1954, which has established a Commitment to Teaching Fund, Amherst is able each year to award stipends to a limited number of Amherst graduates who have been teaching for ten years or less.

Stipends are intended to supplement teacher salaries and to encourage young alumni to pursue careers in teaching.  Awards will be made to those Amherst graduate teachers who, in the opinion of a reviewing committee, best represent, through their applications, a serious long-term commitment to teaching these students.  Application information is sent to alumni teachers in November.  To receive this mailing alumni are asked to update their employment information in the Alumni Directory or contact the Career Center.
Deadline: mid-January

Annual Amherst-Affiliated Work Experience Opportunities

Children’s Village Book for Boys Fellowship
The Children's Village, in Dobbs Ferry, New York, is the largest residential treatment center for neglected and abused boys in the country.  A recent New York Times study ranked the center as one of the top five foster care agencies in the state of New York. Over 300 boys, who range in age from 6 to 18, attend the campus school, which is operated by the public school system, and live together in twenty-two small on-campus cottages.  The mission of the Books for Boys program is to provide new books for all the boys on the Children's Village campus and to help the boys make lifelong connections to reading and writing. Adult staff, fellows, and volunteers serve as literacy role models who work to instill a passion for literature of all kinds.  Amherst College students are invited to apply to this wonderful alumni-hosted summer fellowship program.  Benefits: stipend and potential housing.
