Teaching--Independent
Schools
Many Amherst graduates have chosen to teach
in "prep" schools, religiously-affiliated
schools, or other independent schools after graduation. Private
schools tend to hire uncertified teachers with
a strong background (e.g. undergraduate major
or Master's) in their desired teaching field.
First-year teachers in these kinds of schools
often have many other responsibilities, such
as coaching sports, working in administrative
positions, or serving as resident faculty in
dorms in addition to teaching.
Some of these schools have recuited directly
on campus, while others interview applicants
at job fairs.

Teacher
Training Programs
Some public and many private schools also offer internships or teacher training
programs, which are based on structured supervision at that school, supplemented
by coursework at a nearby graduate program. These can be for one or two
years. Interns can earn state certification, a Masters degree, or both. Candidates
apply through the K12 school. More information is available in the Career
Center, as well as from NAIS.
