Women's 2nd Novice FourThere were only six second novice fours entered this year, so this crew only had one race. During the warm-up they were focused in the boat and concentrated on the race. They had a flawless start that set them ahead of the pack. They did not look back. At no point did coxswain Lawrence see the bow seat of any other crew. Bowdoin and Simmons pushed Amherst, remaining on their heels until the 500m mark where Amherst took a power ten to pull away from Simmons. At the 1000m mark, they took another power ten to pull away from Bowdoin. They stayed strong at a 33, a new high racing rate for them, and managed to hold every stroke together. As they approached the spectators in the last 500, coaches and teammates were in awe to see this crew ahead of the pack by over a boat length of open water. They crossed the finish line well in first, ending the season with a bang. |
Women's Novice FourHeat: This crew had no problem making it to the grand finals. At the start, Holy Cross and Clark were hot on their tails, but at the 500m mark Amherst pulled away. They maintained a steady, powerful rate through the finish, with no real need to sprint. A fairly strong crosswind made it difficult to steer straight. Final: An intense crosswind made it nearly impossible to get a point at the start, but this did not rattle these women. Despite a strong start, Bowdoin was two seats ahead after the settle, while Tufts was a seat behind. Amherst and Bowdoin steadily pulled away from Tufts, eventually leaving them behind. Bowdoin consistently gained on Amherst until the 500m, where the cox (bow coxed) was even with Bowdoin's stroke seat. After some powerful "focus-tens," Amherst was even by the 1000m and were nose-to-nose for a bit. Amherst made a move. They increased the rate two beats, and surged ahead of Bowdoin. By the 1500m, they had gained a large lead. The sprint was even more powerful and once again, coach Thomas and teammates were astounded to see this crew ahead with open water as they crossed the finish line. These women kept excellent technique the entire time, correcting issues that had plagued them the entire season. Especially notable was the improved set and body-angle synchronization. After the race, the rowers were so exhausted they could hardly paddle to the victory dock, let alone get out and stand proudly for their medals. It did not show. |
![]() | Women's 2nd Varsity FourHeat: A performance that must not go without praise is this composite novice-varsity crew. After barely over a month of rowing for the three novices, this crew really pulled it together. Off the line, they stayed close behind bowdoin, and passed Brandeis. To make it to the grand final, they had to keep ahead of this trailing crew. Cox Patel called several motivational power tens throughout, and these women maintained their position. Although they had trouble bringing the rate up for the sprint, they crossed the line ahead of Brandeis, successfully making it to the grand final. An incredible feat for this young crew. Final: Due to some technical difficulties, the start of this race was not as smooth as before. They fell behind, and remained behind throughout. Nonetheless, this crew worked hard, putting power into every stroke of their last race of the season. They crossed the line in sixth. This crew has really come along in the last few weeks, and today's performance proved that to everyone. |
![]() | Women's Varsity FourHeat: This crew had a strong first race. Their warm-up was focused and smooth, and they approached the line with confidence. There was a slight crosswind, which made alignment difficult, but Kekacs remained calm and steered her crew intelligently. Off the start, they were out in front with Simmons and Lesley. Simmons quickly pulled away with Amherst close behind. Brandeis, however, kept Amherst on its toes. Not expecting them to be so close, Amherst had to react. It was a true race. Brandeis would make a move, and Amherst would respond. Our women did not let Brandeis break them, maintaining about a boat length lead throughout. Brandeis started their sprint early, but Amherst responded, pulling away at the finish. They were challenged, but made it to the grand finals. Final: This crew was happy with their heats race, but knew they had a little more speed to find in the final. Once again, a relaxed, smooth warm-up. It was a tough race. Off the start, Amherst was in fourth, uncharacteristic for this crew. After the settle, they fell into sixth place. This crew worked hard to pull it back up, but remained just a few seats behind Franklin Pierce for the majority of the race. Amherst was determined to move up. Approaching the sprint, they did several power tens, and slowly inched up on Franklin Pierce. In the sprint, Amherst increased the power, bow balls moving back and forth until the finish line. Unsure of who had crossed first, this crew waited to hear results. They were proud of their row regardless, knowing that they had been more aggressive than they had all season. Turns out, they edged out Franklin Pierce, beating them in the last five strokes. |
![]() | Men's Varsity FourHeat: The men started out strong, leading the pack until 700m in, at which point Boston College pulled ahead. Amherst rowed well in the second thousand, but BC had gained enough of a lead that Amherst was unable to catch them. They were well in second, and gained a bit of ground on BC at the sprint, qualifying them for the grand finals. Final: Despite a solid start, Amherst was trailing slightly off the line. The three leaders pulled ahead early, and Amherst battled with the fourth and fifth place boats throughout the race. In the sprint, Amherst pulled ahead of Tufts, taking fifth. |
