10/7/06 - Shelton, CT
Men's 1st Varsity Pair: Chris Parkinson (Stroke), Jordan Brower (Bow)
Men's 2nd Varsity Pair: Jack Liebersohn (Stroke), William Shuck (Bow)
The entries in the pairs event were Amherst College's first this event at the Housatonic.
Seniors Christopher Parkinson and Jordan Brower christened the Greta Elise, and Carl Jack Liebersohn '09
and Will Shuck '09 rowed in the Ada Brigit, two of Amherst's new racing pairs. Parkinson and Brower,
returning from last year's four which finished a narrow second to Army at this course, rowed a strong race,
finishing third out of four entries with a time of 19:04. Liebersohn and Shuck finished fourth just
over sixteen seconds later. Considering Amherst's relative inexperience in this event and the high
quality of the other entries in this event, Coach Stekl was quite happy with the effort.
Women's Varsity Pair: Ilse van Meerbeek (Stroke), Sara Barmettler (Bow)
In the first women's race of the day, the varsity pair of senior Ilse van
Meerbeek and Junior Sara Barmettler got off to an excellent start,
thanks to the stellar steering of Barmettler in bow and the steady pace
set by van Meerbeek. Despite some tough head wind at points, they wound their way through the course with ease,
beating out a crew from Lesley University by over a minute to finish 3rd
out of 4 boats in 22:04.
Women's Varsity Four: Maria Rosasco (Stroke), Sarah Zimmerman (3), Saskia Fabricant (2), Anna Meyendorff (Bow), Caitlin Kekacs (Cox)
Next up was the women's varsity four, with Maria Rosasco '09 at stroke,
Sarah Zimmerman '09 rowing 3-seat, Saskia Fabricant '09 at 2, Anna
Meyendorff '09 in bow, and Caitlin Kekacs '07 coxing. Though a fierce
wind was blowing while they waited for their turn to start, they warmed
up quickly as the race began and maintained their composure to finish
10th in the 12 boat field, with a time of 20:42, a minute and a half
ahead of the 11th place boat.
Women's 1st Novice Four: Anjie Zheng (Stroke), Jesse Jokinen (3), Kate Ward (2), Sophia Cai (Bow), Mary Beth Broadbent (Cox)
Immediately following the varsity women were Amherst's three novice
fours, competing in their first collegiate regatta. Their enthusiasm was
unparalleled as they captured 5th, 6th, and 8th places in their 9-boat
event. Anjie Zheng '10 stroked the first novice four to their 5th place
finish in 22:55, with the help of her teammates Jesse Jokinen '10 at 3,
Kate Ward '10 at 2, Sophia Cai '10 in the bow, and coxswain Mary Beth
Broadbent '10.
Women's 2nd Novice Four: Julia Steinberger (Stroke), Annie Choi (3), Ali DeLeon (2), Rebecca Martinez (Bow), Maureen Yu (Cox)
Former men's coxswain Julia Steinberger '09, now stroking a novice
women's four, had her boat close behind at 23:35. 3-seat Annie Choi '10,
Ali DeLeon '10 at 2-seat, Rebecca Martinez '10 at bow and Maureen Yu '10
in the coxswain's seat filled out the boat.
Women's 3rd Novice Four: Stephanie Reitter (Stroke), Romelle Whalen (3), Meredith Case (2), Jenny Kang (Bow), Jessica Choi (Cox)
Rounding out the day for the Amherst women, the four coxed by Jessica
Choi '10, which featured Stephanie Reitter '09 at stroke, Romelle Whalen
'10 in the 3-seat, Meredith Case '10 at 2-seat, and Jenny Kang in the
bow, rowed a solid race to finish in 26:15, over 2 minutes ahead of the
9th place boat.
Men's Varsity Four: Scott Ganz (Stroke), Kevin Nattinger (3), Milo Dee (2), Alex Urquhart (Bow), Disha Patel (Cox)
In the Mens Collegiate Four, Amherst rowed the Craig C. Reilly with the hopes of continuing the
tradition of strong results in the Collegiate Fours. Amherst was the first four to row the course
and no other crews entered the Reilly's vicinity. The boat, stroked by Scott Ganz '07, with Kevin
Nattinger sitting in the three seat, Milo Dee in two and Alexander Urquhart in the bow, coasted to
a ninth place finish out of fifteen crews. The crew completed the course in just over seventeen minutes,
a very strong time.
Men's Novice Eight: James Esdaile (Stroke), Jeff Chambers (7), Alex Gonzalez (6), Charles Tanenbaum (5), Christopher McConkey (4), Jeff Blevins (3), Burr Fong (2), Nathaniel Hopkin (Bow), Alice Cutler (Cox)
The final race of the day for the men was the Collegiate Novice Eight. The Novices rowed the Thistle and Rose to a
seventh place finish. The Thistle competed against some very high quality crews, including Yale and Brown.
For their first race, a time of just under eighteen minutes is very strong and leaves high hopes for the future.
