Men's Varsity Four: The mens varsity four had a strong start and were leading the pack by a bow ball until the thousand meter mark. Choppy water and a loss of composure at around the eleven hundred meter mark caused Conn. College to pull ahead and maintain their lead until the finish line. The men's four is looking forward to a weekend of exciting racing at New England Fours.
Women's Varsity Four: The varsity women had a strong start to the first race of the day, trying out a slightly longer start and a higher body rate than before. There was a slight tailwind and the water was a bit choppy, but otherwise, the course was pretty calm. They quickly outdistanced Mass. Maritime and hung tight with Middlebury and Conn. College for the first 500 meters before Midd began to pull away from the rest of the field. Conn took a 2 boat length lead over Amherst, and though the women fought back a bit with a move at the 750 meter mark, they were not able to close the gap, finishing 3rd out of 4.
Men's Novice Four: After a decent start this crew settled into a steady pace. They remained four seats behind Conn. College's B boat (Conn's A boat pulling ahead) for the whole race. Despite power tens and improved technique, they were unable to make a move on Conn B. The crew was slightly disappointed with their row since it did not match up with how they had been rowing in practice. They finished 3rd out of five boats.
Women's Novice Four:This crew raced Conn. College and Middlebury, two crews they had already beaten this season. They increased our margin of victory, especially over Conn. They were ahead the entire race after a great start. Around the 500m Conn tried to move up on us but the women held them off. They lost a bit of their run around the 1500m mark, when the wind picked up, but they pulled it back together for the sprint. It sprint was a little short but very powerful and synchronized. This crew has improved a lot throughout the season and are looking ahead to New England Fours. It is very possible that they could come home victorious.
Women's 2nd Novice Four: This crew had another amazing race today. Everyone in the boat pulled it together for the race and achieved the set that they had not been able to get all week. Once again, they pulled away quickly from Middlebury with a great start. They maintained a solid rate throughout the race and had a great sprint, finishing well ahead of the other two crews. This second novice four also anticipates a strong showing at New England Fours.
