The varsity men were the top boat of the day. From the start, Amherst and Bowdoin's first boat were out in front, pretty much even. At the 1000m mark, Amherst took some power tens and pulled slightly ahead. Bowdoin responded. The two crews wrestled for first until the sprint where Amherst pulled out ahead to win the Rimmele Cup, making coach Stekl proud.
Once again, the varsity women had a great start. Unfortunately, the wind picked up and rattled this crew a bit. They ended up finishing in third, but are confident that this was not their best rowing and are prepared to work hard in the coming weeks.
The second varsity women's four raced for the first time this weekend. This crew is made up of three novice rowers who just joined the team this spring, and one varsity rower, so this was a first race ever for most of them. This crew has really come together in the past weeks considering their lack of experience. They raced against some strong 2V fours, but maintained composure throughout. With more practice, this boat can greatly improve throughout the remaining weeks of spring season.
After holding 3rd for over half of the race, Amherst's novice men's four put the moves on the Bowdoin B boat and passed them around the 1000m mark. Leaving them behind, Amherst focused on catching the A boat. They had some of their best rowing all season, and ended up in second, a length behind Bowdoin's A boat. They had a very strong sprint at the end. This week has been a turning point for this crew and they are looking forward to the upcoming races.
The women's novice four started shakily with Bowdoin almost a full length ahead after the start. Amherst maintained this position throughout the race. In the 3rd 500, the crew really pulled it together, committing fully to their sides at the catch, which greatly improved their set. They were ahead of Middlebury off the start and increased their lead on them the entire race.
Off the line, Amherst's second novice women's four pulled out in front with Bowdoin. This crew had a great settle, but decided to ramp it up a bit to maintain their position with Bowdoin. Amherst sat about half a boat length down from Bowdoin throughout the race, but at the sprint, they pulled it up to tie for first place. An exciting race to watch from the shore.
Right off the start, the novice women's eight was behind Bowdoin and ahead of Middlebury. Despite some timing issues and rushed slide, the rowers were powerful and energetic, as well as excited about racing in an eight.
The men's pair started out strong, but after two boat-stopping crabs, the crew was unable to pull it back up, finishing in third place.
Amherst raced two women's pairs for the first time this spring. The first pair started out strong, and was out in front for the first 700 meters of the race. Due to some steering difficulties, this crew fell back two places, and finished in third. The second Amherst pair came on strong at the end with a powerful sprint, challenging the first pair, but the first pair responded, holding onto third.
