Disability ServicesAmherst College students with documented disabilities may receive assistance in a variety of ways, depending on the nature and extent of the limitations imposed by the disability, as well as specific course content and mode of testing. Reasonable accommodation is determined after review of the submitted documentation, follow-up conversations with the student and, in some cases, consultation with the student's faculty. Each support service or academic accommodation provided on the basis of a disability is determined on an individual, case-by-case basis, as supported by the documentation and warranted by the nature of the course, insofar as the service or accommodation does not compromise the fundamental academic integrity of the curriculum and is otherwise consistent with College policies. The person responsible for the oversight of disability-based services and accommodations at Amherst College is Charri Boykin-East, Senior Associate Dean of Students, who may be reached by phone at (413) 542-2529, by fax at (413) 542-8488, by e-mail at cjboykineast@amherst.edu, or in person at her office in Converse Hall 105. While the Dean of Students Office provides considerable coordination, supervision and support, the student also takes an active role in the collaborative process of identifying, arranging, and monitoring the provision of services and accommodations. No service or accommodation is provided automatically or unilaterally by the Dean of Students Office. In particular, each student must initiate the process by meeting with Dean Boykin-East at the beginning of each semester to discuss and request appropriate accommodations.
