INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT POLICY                           

Minuteman Pest Control and Wildlife Service – Pest Management Plan

Scope:

In accordance with the Massachusetts Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Chapter 85 Amherst College has developed and implemented this Integrated Pest Management plan.

Purpose:

Our Integrated Pest Management plan is a systematic approach for managing pests, including but not limited to ants, bats, bees, bugs, cockroaches, fleas, flies, mice, squirrels, termites.  The IPM plan, in an effort to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure of the Campus Community inclusive of children to chemical pesticides focuses on the avoidance, monitoring, prevention and suppression of pests.   If control measures noted above fail to properly manage pests, and chemical pesticides are required, Amherst College shall, with the assistance of our outside Integrated Pest Management Contractor use materials and methods that minimize risk to the public and the environment.

Applicability:

According to the Massachusetts Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, schools and associated departments listed below are affected by this Act known as the Integrated Pest Management Plan:

The regulation does not apply to….

I Definitions

Emergency Waivers:
A single use waiver issued to a school, day care center, or a school aged childcare program by the Board of Health Agent, Health Department or the Department of Food and Agriculture.  It can only be issued in case of emergency and when there are no other viable alternatives to the use of chemicals.

Integrated Pest Control Committee:
A committee made up of representatives of the Campus Community whose responsibility it is to aid in the development, enforcement, implementation, modification and use of the Integrated Pest Management Plan.  The committee shall be made up of 13 people representing the following:

Integrated Pest Control Supervisor: Pamela Korenewsky
The Amherst College employee serving as the liaison for the Campus Community with regard to pest control.  The IPCS is responsible for overseeing all pest control operations and related activities.  The IPCS will conduct frequent inspections and shall meet with building occupants, contractors, day care operators, pest control contractors and other interested parties as necessary to best control “areas of concern”.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
An effective and environmental sensitive approach to pest management that seeks to minimize the use of chemical pesticides by avoiding, monitoring, preventing and suppressing pests through a combination of control methods designed to protect people and the environment from unnecessary use of chemicals.
               
Integrated Pest Management Contractor:
A licensed pesticide applicator company that is contracted by the School or Day Care to assist with the identification and control of pests as outlined in our Integrated Pest Management Program.

Pests: living organisms (animals, bugs, plants, rodents or microorganisms) that interfere with use of the school site for human purposes.  They can pose a threat to people, property or the environment.

Pesticides: substances or mixtures of substances, that prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate pests, or defoliate, desiccate or regulate plants.  The term pesticides shall include:

Structural Pests:
Ants, bees, cockroaches, fleas, flies, hornets, head lice, mice, rats, silverfish, spiders, other wood damaging pests and weeds, including vines

III Implementation

The Integrated Pest Management Program (IPMP) at Amherst College has been developed, implemented and maintained for our two (2) campus day care centers, Little Red School House at 25 East Amherst College Campus Dr., and Woodside Daycare at 155 Woodside Ave. The IPMP shall incorporate building(s), grounds and other areas that are accessible to the children, including ancillary areas while in the care of the day care providers.
Amherst College prohibits the application of any pesticide on campus, including those that are readily available and packaged for the general consumer unless the applicator is a certified and or licensed applicator.
