Teaching
I have taught Evolutionary Biology (Biology 32), Adaptation and the Organism (Biology 18), Special Topics in Biology (Biology 97/98), and advised senior Honors theses (Biology 77/78) in the Department of Biology and will be developing additional courses for upcoming semesters. Students who are interested in learning more about the courses I teach should contact me with questions.
If you are currently enrolled in either Biology 32 or Biology 18, check the Amherst College Blackboard Site for information on your course, including the syllabus, lecture notes, reading assignments, etc.
Advising
Current Biology majors (or those considering Biology as a major) – download the very handy Major's Checklist here ( .pdf) or link directly to the Biology Departmental website for information about the requirements for the Biology major, available courses in the department or information about the Senior Honors program.
Want me to write you a recommendation letter? I am happy to do so, but please stop by (Life Sciences 224), call (413-542-2168), or email me (jsmiller) to ask first. Then, make sure I have the following pieces of information...
- Provide me with a brief description of the program to which you are applying. If there is something that really appeals to you about a program let me know. Generally, the more information I have about you (& your interests), the stronger your letter.
- When is the due date?
- What is the format for the letter (e.g., e-mail versus hard copy, form(s) to fill out, etc.)?
- To whom should the letter be addressed and to what address should the letter be sent?
