Monograph Bindery Procedures
Decide which bindery ticket and binding method to use (Glue or Class A):
- Sewn bindings (signatures) - use Class A ticket.
- Glued bindings - use Advantage ticket.
- Music scores - use Class A ticket with "bind to lie flat".
- Music scores with parts - use Class A ticket with "parts in buckram and pocket for parts".
Complete bindery ticket (see example tickets):
- At the top of the ticket write Amherst.
- Choose a color that matches the cover of the item being bound.
- No. of same title being bound - usually is one unless duplicate copies of same title.
- Lettering is always white (check the W box).
- Write the title of the book following what is on the spine. Do not include subtitles or jump over words. Shorter is better - patrons search by call number not title.
- Write the call number on the lower left corner of the bindery ticket.
- Write any special instructions on the bottom right corner of the ticket (i.e., "Bind to lie flat" for scores).
- On the second copy of the ticket, write any notes for in-house use such as locations.
- Paperclip any location flags, notify slips, or gift plates to the second ticket.
Packing books for bindery and filing control slips:
- Pull the control slip out of the item and write at the top BIND and put in the envelope on the daily cataloging book truck.
- File bindery tickets in the following locations:
- Ticket copy 1 - put in the item to be bound behind the title page.
- Ticket copy 2 - put in the Amherst file in alphabetical order by first words on the ticket. Paperclip any special book plate, location flag, etc. to this copy.
- Take items and pack in a bindery box. When a bindery box is full, retrieve additional bindery boxes from the hallway outside the department.
Remember: Shipments go out every other Wednesday morning. See schedule
