Reclass Policy
Reclass History:
- All live journal titles in Dewey were reclassed by 1995.
- In 1998, selected Music Library 780's were reclassed.
- Monographs in 000-499 were reviewed for reclass as a result of a grant in 1987-1989 for which a cataloger (A.Rhoades) was hired to work with Classics Department faculty to review the collection. When that review did not generate sufficient volumes and because time was of the essence, Ms. Rhoades selected 5,000 notable titles in 100-399 for reclass to LC.
The Robert Frost Library has a substantial number of volumes in a locally created Dewey Decimal classification:
- The 500's and 600's are located off-site at the AC Depository.
- The 780's (Music books from Frost and Music libraries) are located off-site at the AC Depository.
- The remaining 700's (Fine Arts) are located on Level C in compact shelving.
- The 800-900's are located on Level C in compact shelving.
At present, a title/volume in Dewey is reclassed when:
- Title is needed from the Dewey collection in Frost for Reserve. It will be reclassed before going on reserve if time permits or when the semester is over.
- Title is being handled for some reason, such as new spine label is needed, item needs repair/bindery, or an item is related to an LC volume that is being handled, etc. (incidental reclass)
- Title is at the Depository and is requested as an FCD or ILLiad request. Upon return to Access Services the volume is sent to Cataloging for reclass after Access Services has cleared the loan transaction. Slip is put in volume “Reclass from ADEP”.Cataloging changes location from ADEP to AFRST and reclasses. (This is a modification in procedures and will take effect April 3, 2006)
