Reference Guidelines
Identifying Reference Books
- The Head of Reference identifies most titles to be located in Main/Ref by using the Brooks Fund for Reference materials in the ordering process.
- When other funds are used for materials that appear to be reference books, the Head of Acquisitions attempts to identify them at the point of ordering so that the Cataloging Section will find a REF note on the control slip.
- When an item is not pre-identified in the ordering process, the Cataloging
staff uses its judgment to redirect titles to the Ref Decision
Needed shelf in Cataloging for review by the Head of Reference.
- Some examples are books that have lengthy entries or essays, guides, and bibliographies on Frost, Dickinson, or Shakespeare (other individual author bibliographies are sent to the stacks).
