Catalogs
Find books and journal titles in the Four College Library Catalog (for Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Smith) from the Library's homepage; there is a separate UMass Catalog. You can search in the library catalogs by AUTHOR, by SUBJECT, by TITLE (or JOURNAL TITLE), or by KEYWORD. The SUBJECT choice requires the exact word or phrase chosen by libraries to define your topic. Try starting with KEYWORD and looking at the subjects assigned to items you retrieve.
Indexes/Databases
PsycINFO
(1887present)
Index covering the professional and academic literature in psychology
and related disciplines including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology,
education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas.
Academic
Search Premier
Fulltext articles from over 3,600 journals in the social sciences, arts
and humanities, and sciences. Also includes about 1,000 titles that are
indexed but not fulltext . Dates of journals vary, some go back to the
1920's, others are current issues only.
Expanded
Academic ASAP (1980 - present)
An index to articles from a wide variety of academic journals. It lists
articles from psychology, sociology, and many other disciplines. Many
references include the complete text of the articles.
Finding Journal Articles
Bibliographies and online indexes provide citations to articles
in journals that may or may not be readily available in the Science Library
or at Frost. This year we have a new ACLinks service for many databases.
When you find a citation that interests you, click on the
button and the system checks to see whether there is an electronic copy
of the article available. If there is not, you can select an automatic
search of the library catalog to see whether Amherst or another 4-College
Library has the journal in print.
If you already have a reference and want to know whether the Library has an electronic version, fill in the blanks of the new Citation Linker, and it will search for a copy, offer you a catalog search for the title of the journal, or, if you choose, look for a copy of the article posted out on the Web. When in doubt, check the online library catalog yourself under the title of the journal (not the article)
