STUDY ROOM
Visiting the Study Room (The Green Teaching Gallery)
The Mead Art Museum holds a collection of more than 16,000 works of art, of which only one percent (1%) can be displayed at any time. Visitors curious to see works not currently on view are welcome to see them in the Mead’s study room, the Green Teaching Gallery, which is open by appointment Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To learn what the Mead’s collection contains, please consult the
Five College Museums Database
To learn how to use the database, please consult the
Essential Database Tips
To make an appointment to use the study room, please send a list of the objects you wish to see, including the accession numbers (listed near the bottom of each Object Record screen, such as “AC 1973.68”) together with the proposed day and time of your visit to the Mead’s Assistant Collections Manager, Inga Stevens: istevens@amherst.edu.
To allow the museum’s staff sufficient time to locate the artwork in storage and transport it to the study room, and to ensure that space will be available at the time requested for your visit, please give as much advance notice as possible—at least one business day, and preferably two weeks.
Faculty are welcome to reserve the Green Teaching Gallery for use as a classroom suitable for groups of up to 20 people. In addition to its facilities for the display of original artwork, the room includes equipment for dual slide projection. To reserve the study room for a class visit, please contact the Mead’s Assistant Collections Manager, Inga Stevens: istevens@amherst.edu .
If you require more specialized information about the Mead’s collections than appears in the database, please consult the museum’s published collections catalogues.
We look forward to welcoming you soon!
