The models are composed of spheres, cylindrical surfaces, quadric surfaces, ellipsoids, paraboloids, elliptic cones, and hyperboloids. For many of these students, visiting the Mead was their first experience in an art museum, and they discuss how this project inspired them, how it made them look at art differently, and whether or not they consider themselves to be artists. Nature reclaims the land that humans overran in The Past. The father of the Hudson River School, Cole grew up in an industrial area in England and moved to America as a teenager. According to Sarah Burns, he feared democracy and believed in the cyclical rise and fall of empires. Perhaps these two paintings are an allegorical warning that even America cannot escape this pattern.
