9.9 - 9.10 Captain Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth 9.16 - 9.17 Hatch Brown Trophy at MIT 9.17 Northern Series Two at Williams 9.23 New England Series Three at MIT 9.24 Invite at Connecticut College Sailed in light air and FJs, the Invite was the first
collegiate regatta ever for crews Eric Vennemeyer '04 and Melissa Fernandez
'04. Though the regatta was held in combined divisions, the races were
scored for separate fleets, much to the dismay of the A team of Adam McClay
'03 and Vennemeyer, who ended the day with a strong third place showing
against the all-varsity fleet. The B team of Nadine Krupinski '03 and
Fernandez rounded the windward mark in second overall in the final race,
but were unable to hold on as the breeze filled in from behind on the
reach.
9.30 Southern Series Four at Yale 9.30 Protest Trophy @ Roger Williams Sailed in FJs, it was Amherst's first trip to Roger Williams' relatively new site (Fall 1999) on their campus. A 10-18 kt southerly accompanied by an occassionally stiff chop greeted the Amherst team. The A team of Peter Beardsley and Willy Rogers rounded the windward mark in first place in 6 of the 12 races, but due to some poor leeward mark roundings, only held on to win 3 of those races. They still managed to finish second overall in the A fleet. The B team of Nadine Krupinski and Melissa Fernandez started the day alright, but a couple capsizes in the surprisingly chilly water and a poorly dressed B team crew led to several DNS as Fernandez tried to keep warm.
10.7 Team Race Invitational at Tufts The breeze was shifty as usual on Upper Mystic Lake, and Amherst sent a team of three experienced skippers with three inexperienced crews to their first ever Team Race regatta. Amherst managed to defeat Dartmouth in their second race, although they crossed the line 2-4-6, because the winning Dartmouth boat was scored OCS. In subsequent races, Amherst battled the Larks, the breeze, and their team racing inexperience. What was a winning combination would suddenly become losing in the shifty breeze, and the team is prepared for an aggressive spring team racing schedule. Round one: Five team round-robin Round two: bottom three round-robin, top two teams sailed three more races, all races counted toward final score. 1. Tufts 3-1; 2-1; 5-2
