9.11 - 9.12 Captain Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth Saturday brought decent but shifty winds
to Lake Mascoma. 9.12 Northern Series One at Boston University There was no wind until 12, and the breeze was extremely shifty in classic Charles River fashion, which posed problems for A Sailing as most shifty breezes seem to do. The A team of Seth Levin '01 and Dreux Chappell '00 battled for two races before succumbing to the allure of the river's seamy underbelly. In an attempt to check out the water's cleaniness first hand, Levin found it prudent to try capsizing for no reason in the light air on the first reach of the third race. After taking a bottom sample with the top of their mast, the A team passed the buck to the B team of Nadine Krupinski '03 and Sarah Short '02. Krupinski made her much awaited collegiate sailing debut, and showed good potential. Only three races were completed on modified triangles.
9.18 - 9.19 Hatch Brown Trophy at Boston University / MIT Amherst proved that they learned their
lesson from Capt Hurst Bowl 9.19 Invitational at Connecticut College One race was attempted in A in light breeze before the cancellation of this regatta at 11:30am. Jay Harris and Dreux Chappell were set to race in A, while the freshman team of Nadine Krupinski and Adam McClay would have sailed B. 9.24 Singlehanded Elimination C at Coast Guard This regatta to qualify for New England Singlehanded Champs was sailed on a Friday in Lasers after the remnants of Hurricane Floyd postponed it a week. Jay Harris and Peter Beardsley traveled to Coast Guard and were greeted with a 15-17 kt southerly that demanded top conditioning and athleticism from the sailors. The top 6 qualified for New England Singlehanded Champs. Six races were completed on Gold Cup and triangle-windward courses, and sailors were on the water until 7:15pm.
9.25 Invite at URI The Amherst Sailing Team made its first trip in many
years to URI to sail FJs in a nice 10 kt southerly. 7 races were completed
in each division on modified triangle courses. Heather Werner '03 and
Paul Heller '02 made their collegiate sailing debuts.
9.26 New England Series 3 at MIT Some teams from the cancelled Invite at MIT came to this rescheduled regatta. Amherst fielded a team of all freshmen skippers, with Nadine Krupinski in A and Adam McClay in B, with experienced upperclass crews of Dreux Chappell and Willie Rogers, respectively. 10 races were sailed on the Charles River in FJs and Techs.
10.02 - 10.03 Cary-Price Intersectional at University of Michigan Amherst took some getting used to the JY-15s and the
breeze, Light and shifty winds on Great Herring Pond on windward-leeward
courses. Drew Foster and Elizabeth Grenley sailed A, and Sarah Short and
Dreux Chappell sailed in B. 3-7 were separated by only 10 points in a
very close regatta.
10.3 Protest Trophy at Mass Maritime Sunday brought stronger breeze to the Pond, causing
the A team of Foster and Short to capsize in one race. Francis from UMass
pinch hit in the B division for the Jeffs, who had to replace a sailor
from the day before.
10.10 NESCAC Regatta Hosted at Tufts by Amherst, for the schools of the New England
Small Colleges Athletic Conference (Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Conn
College, Hamilton, Middlebury, Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan and Williams)
We waited until 1:15pm and realized that the wind just wasn't going to
fill in at Upper Mystic Lake. The regatta will be rescheduled for the
Spring of 2000 10.16 Smith Trophy at MIT 10.16 Invite at Boston College 10-20 kts of breeze in 420s. 6 races were sailed and the
regatta was done by 1pm, much to the dismay of the Amherst team.
10.30 RI State Champs at Roger Williams Sailed at Bristol YC in FJs. The first set for A was held in a light northerly with mildly strong current. The A team of Beardsley and Rogers picked off 3 boats at the finish of the first race, and held a third place through the leeward mark of the second race, but chose not to roll tack every 10 seconds in the non existant breeze, allowing Tufts and UVM to propel themselves ahead. After a two hour postponement, the regatta resumed in a 6-9 kt southerly. 4 races were completed on modified triangles.
10.30 Invite at Boston University 3-8 kts on the Charles in FJs. 6 races were sailed
in each division. The A team of Harris and Robin Goldman sailed well,
but were over early twice and hit the windward mark in another race. The
B team of Emily Fleury and Lindsay Clarke started the day on fire with
a 2 and a 4, but slipped a bit from there.
