3.19 Invite at Brown

Sailed at Edgewood YC in 420s.
A cold but sunny day greeted the Amherst sailors in their first regatta of the spring. Winds were variable, ranging from 5 to 15 kts from the NE. Hannah Schofield, sailing for only the second time EVER crewed in the A division, while the freshmen duo of Nadine Krupinski and Lindsay Clarke sailed to a third place performance in the B fleet. Despite the team's relatively lackluster performance, the team was competitive in every race and usually trailed the leaders by less than 20 seconds at the finish. The highlight of the day, besides the weather, was when the judge decided in favor of Amherst in a protest and disqualified the Brown skipper in race 5A.

3.25 J-22 Invitational at Coast Guard

Sailed in a fluky 5-15 kt southerly, the team of skipper Drew Foster, Paul Heller, and Seth Levin competed in the first spring qualifier for the fall New England Sloop Championships. The team ran up against tough competition, as well as their own inexperience in the boat, but still managed some sharp spinnaker sets and decent upwind legs. The day served as a tune-up for next weekend's J-22 Invite. Eight races were sailed on windward-leeward courses.

3.26 Invitational at Connecticut College

Sailed in FJs on the Thames River.
An almost entirely freshmen Amherst team faced tough competition early in the spring, discovering that not only are FJs less stable than a 420, but that fewer small schools compete in March. The team also battled a shifty, gusty northwester that ranged from 0-20 kts. 10 races were sailed in combined divisions. B team crew Anders Watson '02 competed in his first collegiate regatta.

4.1 J-22 Invitational at Coast Guard

Sailed in a shifty, gusty southwester, the Amherst team of skipper Peter Beardsley '01, Drew Foster '02 and Seth Levin '01 struggled early in the day. Despite being the second team off the dock, the group did not hear the starting sequence in the first race, and started five minutes late. Despite this, the team recovered to pass two boats in the race. After spinnaker troubles in the first two races, the team decided not to set the chute again on the short windward-leeward courses, and heated up from there, placing 2, 3, 2 in their next three races. The team managed a third place finish overall, beating Coast Guard and Mass Maritime, varsity programs with keelboat teams.

4.1 Northern Series One at Boston University by UVM

A classic shifty/puffy southwester on the Charles River challenged the young second semester Amherst squad, who had only sailed in on the river once. UMass captain Kris "Kringle" Daly pinch-hit as the Amherst B team skipper in the non-trophy event.

4.16 Invite at Boston College by Amherst

Despite a weather forecast that suggested a breeze would fill in by noon, the regatta was cancelled at 11:30am -- the low tide in Boston Harbor necessitated a 2:30pm regatta completion time in order to avoid severe difficulties in taking the boats out of the water. The regatta chairmen were Jay Harris '02 and Anders Watson '02. The A team was Peter Beardsley '01 and Dreux Chappell '00, and a B team of Seth Levin '01 and Will Rogers '01

4.22 Little IIIs at Williams

Regatta Highlights: Wind 12-17 out of the North with slight oscillations. Overcast, 40 degrees. Long modified triangle courses and modified Gold Cups. 6 races sailed and scored combined division. Soup, hot chocolate, bagels with cream cheese, and doughnuts provided.

Amherst Highlights: Up by 1 point going into the last set, Amherst struggled in the final set, allowing Williams to take the win overall. The final leeward mark rounding of the 5th race featured both Amherst boats and both Williams boats with the last beat remaining. A poor rounding by Amherst B allowed both Williams A and B to squirt by, and Williams covered tightly to secure the 1-2. Amherst needed a 1-3 to tie the regatta in the last set, but those hopes were diminished after Amherst A was over early at the start, and despite a valiant comeback, they could not get any closer than 4 boatlengths at the finish. After winning the 1999 Little III Title, Amherst lost for only their second time in 4 years to Williams in any NEISA regatta, and hopes to reclaim the title in 2001 at Wesleyan.
