4.11 Tyrell Trophy at Boston University
This was a really nice regatta -- we originally were going to sail at
BC on the 11th, but the regatta was cancelled. Luckily there were still
some openings at BU -- it was a beautiful sunny day on the Charles
River, wind 7-13 kts out of the east, in FJs. 5 races were held
for each division. All freshmen competed for Amherst, compared to most
of the other schools who sailed primarily with upperclassmen. Although
we didn't place as high as we would have liked, we learned a lot, met
some nice people, and basically had a good time -- the key to Amherst
sailing. In addition, we didn't get amazingly lost in the terror known
as downtown Boston. In the A division, Peter Beardsley skippered while
Seth Levin crewed, and in the B division, Will Rogers played Ed McMahon
to Emily Fleury.

4.19 Gibb Trophy at Tufts.
A partly cloudy day on Upper Mystic Lake, with 0-4
kts of breeze, of varying direction. Even though it was nice to
sail Larks, only having two races for each division prior to the 1:30pm
cancellation was a bit disappointing. Neither A with Beardsley and
Rogers nor B with Levin and Kirstin Cattell could get up to speed
all morning, as the regatta was a learning experience for Amherst, with
the top freshmen in New England competing, and eight of the top 20 teams
nationally of the 13.
5.3 Varsity/Frosh at Yale
420s. A partly cloudy day, wind from the southeast
at 5-10 kts. It became sunny, but by then we were leaving, since
they stopped the regatta at 1pm after 5 races for each division -- it
is a busy time of year for everyone with finals. Peter Beardsley
and Willie Rogers sailed to a fourth place overall in the A division,
including a first in the third race -- there is no record of a first by
Amherst in a race that we know of before. Unfortunately, they sailed
inconsistently, and were over early twice in the five boat fleet -- a
definite killer on short courses when all the boats finish within 45 seconds
of each other. In the B division, Anne Cameron and Matt Bevers had
a lot of fun, Amherst Sailing style. Cameron: "Next time we'll hit
all the boats on the starting line." Just kidding, nice sailing
for everyone, a nice, albeit short regatta.
