Spring 2000 Outlook for Men's Golf
The 1999-2000 Lord Jeffs will be looking to continue their position as one of the elite Division III teams in the East. The nationally ranked 1998-99 team loses only one regular to graduation and is looking forward to a very successful year.
The team is led by Captains Joe Graceffa ’00 and last season’s Most Outstanding Golfer Mike Blaisdell ’02. Both have been outstanding contributors throughout their Amherst golf careers. With continued development and consistent play, both have established themselves among the top Division III golfers in the East.
Junior Bob Lutzker has NCAA experience and will be counted on extensively. Contributions from newcomers Todd Ballaban and Jude Volek and the continued development of sophomores John Frechette and Yan Tutschka are key to the team’s future success.
With a strong nucleus returning and the promising freshman class, the 1999-2000 Lord Jeffs look forward to continuing the “tradition of excellence” that is Amherst golf.
Men’s Golf History
Amherst College has enjoyed an outstanding national reputation for over 100 years because of its academic tradition and educational standards. Amherst athletic teams have been a strong contributing factor to this “Tradition of Excellence.”
As part of the athletic program, the Amherst College golf team has emerged as one of the most successful in the East. In recent years, the Lord Jeffs have:
• won 6 Massachusetts State Championships
• won the New England Championship
• qualified for the NCAA Championships 13 times
• graduated 9 All-Americans
• graduated 6 Academic All-Americans
• been consistently ranked among the top Division III teams in the country.
The most exciting new aspect of the program is that the team is now allowed to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships. Previously, conference rules dictated that members of the team could compete only if selected as individuals. That rule has been overturned and the team now enjoys the opportunity to compete for the National Title.
The Amherst golf program offers a challenge as well as an opportunity to the qualified student-athlete by demanding hard work and a commitment to excellence within a challenging educational environment.
