Spring 2000 Outlook for Women's Golf
The 1998-99 Amherst women’s golf team fielded a young squad following the graduation of four seniors. Captain Leah Ricci ‘99 (Brockton, MA) remained consistent throughout the year. Although she was selected for participation in the 1998 NCAA II-III Women’s Golf Championship and unable to play, she remained in contention for selection again this year. Joining Leah was newcomer Jaime Ratner ‘02 (Liberty, NY), who improved her scoring average over the year by five strokes and already has developed into a national caliber player. Devon Biondi ‘00 (Leeds, ME) and Risa Ravitz ‘00 (Toms River, NJ) returned after a semester away in Australia and teamed with Inny Hu ‘99 (Port St. Lucia, FL), Jennifer Cramm ‘01 (Ridgefield, CT) to add depth to the squad. Newcomer Laurie Smith ‘02 (Wilmington, DE) reduced her scoring average by 18 strokes and broke into the Amherst top five for the last two tournaments. The team completed the spring season earning third place in the Massachusetts State Championship, a ninth place finish in the Northeast Intercollegiate Women’s Golf Championship, to which they played host, and a #3 East regional ranking in the Master Card Collegiate Golf Rankings, sponsored by the College Golf Foundation. The 1999-00 team is hopeful for a successful season and will continue to strive for their goals of winning a Mass. State Championship and earning a team bid to the inaugural NCAA Division III National Championship.
Amherst has consistently been one of the leaders in intercollegiate golf for young women at any level, and Coach Morgan continues to work hard to perpetuate this tradition. She continues to promote the Amherst golf program to young high school players who have a desire to pursue an intercollegiate golfing experience and to achieve the best possible liberal arts education.
Women’s Golf Program History:
Amherst College has enjoyed an outstanding national reputation for over 150 years because of its academic tradition and educational standards. Amherst athletic teams have been strong contributors to this “tradition of excellence.”
The Amherst College women’s golf team has emerged as one of the best programs in the East. Under the direction of former Coach Tracy Mehr and tenth-year head coach Michelle Morgan, the Lord Jeffs have:
• won Division II-III National Championship in 1990
• had a Division III National Championship runner-up in 1988
• won 10 Massachusetts State Championships
• won 5 New England Championships
• had 7 All-Americans
• had 4 Academic All-Americans
• qualified 6 women for the NCAA Open Championship, the only team
in the East to be so recognized
• qualified 5 players for the NCAA Division II-III Championship
• had an unprecedented three-time Division III national champion in
1989, 1990 and 1991
• had an ECAC Championship medalist in 1991
• had an ECAC All-Tournament player in 1996
The Amherst program has been a leader in New England intercollegiate golf for women, and it continues to be consistently ranked among the top Division III schools in the country. It is also unique because it remains a coeducational program with two distinct and separate schedules for the women and the men. Both teams practice together and compete with and against one another, thus benefitting from the competitive and social interaction. As a result, they emerge from practice ready to successfully compete with the best teams in the East, all divisions included.
The women’s golf program offers a challenge and an opportunity to the qualified student-athlete by demanding hard work and a commitment to excellence within a challenging educational environment.
