Stechenberg Tallies Five Goals As Jeffs
Thump Conn College, 20-8
Third-ranked Jeffs win fifth-straight, avenge 1999 loss to
Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior
Amherst College Tri-captain Alie Stechenberg (Longmeadow, MA)
scored a career-high five goals, classmate Katherine Poulin
(St. David's, PA) had four goals, and junior midfielder Kristin
Osborn (Morristown, NJ) netted a hat trick and added two assists
as the women's lacrosse team pounded Connecticut College on Saturday,
avenging a 12-11 loss during the 1999 season with a 20-8 win in
New London.
Stechenberg opened the scoring for the
Jeffs 6:47 into the game, Poulin scored 21 seconds later off a
feed from Tri-captain Rachel Bernstein (Maplewood, NJ),
and the Jeffs never looked back, opening up an 8-0 lead before
the Camels would even get on the scoreboard. Conn sophomore Anna
Trafton (Topsham, ME) finally got the hosts on the game at
the 12:31 mark with the first of her four goals for the game,
but the Jeffs responded right off the ensuing draw, with Bernstein
netting her sixth goal of the season.
The visitors ran off four more unanswered
goals, taking a 13-1 lead before Trafton responded at the 2:00
mark. The Camels added one more score just before the half, and
opened the second half with a 4-1 run, closing to within seven
before the Amherst offense took over once more. Junior Sarah
Scheessele (Pittsburgh, PA) netted her second goal of the
game (and ninth of the season) to begin the run, and Stechenberg
finished her career day at the 11:32 mark, scoring off a Robin
Ackerman (Princeton, NJ) feed.
First-year Erin Beaumont (Summit, NJ),
who set an Amherst record with nine points in the Jeffs' 20-4
win over Springfield College on Tuesday, added two goals, and
Bernstein finished with three helpers to go along with her two
tallies, bringing her to 15 points (7g, 8a) for the year. Junior
Jess Thaxton (Wayland, MA) stopped three Camel shots in
the first half, before giving way to freshman Brooke Diamond
(Longmeadow, MA), who recorded four second-half saves.
For Conn, Trafton finished with four goals,
while senior Meghan Welch (Framingham, MA), who almost
singlehandedly lifted the Camels past the Jeffs in their lone
meeting last year with six goals, finished with one goal and three
assists in the loss. The Camels fall to 0-3, and face a tough
road test on Tuesday afternoon at Trinity College.
For the Jeffs, the win is their fifth
in a row to open the season, and it comes in record-setting fashion
as the Jeffs score 20 or more goals in three straight games for
the first time in school history. With the win over the Camels,
the Jeffs turn their attention towards the only other team to
defeat them during the 1999 season--second-ranked Middlebury College.
The last time the two teams met, the Panthers hung on for a dramatic
10-9 victory in the NCAA Division III Championship game at Johns
Hopkins University last May, and the Panthers also handed the
Jeffs an 11-8 loss at the Heron Draw Tournament at William Smith
College, which is where the two teams will meet next Saturday.
