    1999 Season Review:

The 1999 Amherst lacrosse team brought the program to the next level of national prominence as they made a historic run at the NCAA Division III National Championship. The 1999 team finished the spring with its best performance in team history (14-3). The regular season started with excitement as the team traveled to Florida and got off to a 2-0 start with wins over Gettysburg and Drew. Returning home, they continued their success, posting an 11-2 record with losses only to NESCAC rivals Connecticut College and Middlebury. The last two weeks proved to be the biggest challenge as the team faced off against Trinity, Mount Holyoke and Williams. Amherst reached new heights with significant wins over Trinity (17-13) and Williams (12-11), assuring the team their second- ever NCAA post-season bid.

Earning a fifth seed in the 12-team field, Amherst faced off against Colorado College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. After a slow start, the offensive-minded Amherst team came away with a scorching 21-13 win over the visiting Tigers. Amherst’s next opponent was NESCAC rival Bowdoin (13-1), and once again the high-powered offense led by Kristin Osborn (six goals) was too much for their opponent to handle. Amherst defeated the Polar Bears, 15-9, and earned their first trip to the Division III NCAA Final Four. Their next opponent was undefeated perennial national powerhouse and defending national champion The College of New Jersey. Led by Amherst’s strong defensive unit and anchored by Jessica Thaxton in goal, Amherst went on to win, 11-8, in perhaps the biggest upset in Division III lacrosse history. Unfortunately, Amherst came up one goal short in the National Championship game against NESCAC rival Middlebury (9-10).

    2000 Season Preview:

Although the 2000 team will sorely miss Corso, Permut, Carroll and Meade, the NCAA Final Four experience should prove to be invaluable for the 20 players who return. Five players return from one of Division III’s most balanced offenses-second team All- American Kristin Osborn ’01, regional All-American Alie Stechenberg ’00 (captain), All- NESCAC player Sarah Scheessele ’00, playmaker Rachel Bernstein ’00 (captain) as well as regional All-American Katherine Poulin ’00. Also returning on attack with solid experience are Anne Close ‘02, Cara Coscarelli ‘02, Meghan Hely ‘02, Heidi Kahrl ‘02 and Meg Martin ‘02. On defense, Kathleen Sanford ’00 (captain), Alison Kitay ’01, Carrie Foster ’02 and goalkeeper Jessica Thaxton ’01 all return from one of the most stingy defenses in the country (8.35 GAA). They will be joined by returning squad members Robin Ackerman ‘02, Caroline Bruce ‘02, Heather Govern ‘02, Mary Hoeffel ‘02, Jeita Phillips ‘02 and Charlotte Taylor ‘01. Moreover, a strong recruiting class will contribute to the depth and talent of the Amherst lacrosse program in the millenium season.

Assistant Coaches: Carol Knerr (Richmond), Lynn Magovern (Colby)
    Co-captains: Rachel Bernstein '00, Kathleen Sanford '00 & Alie Stechenberg '00
