AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Amherst
Co-captain Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) hit the back
end of a two-shot foul with no time remaining to give the host
Lord Jeffs a dramatic 67-66 come-from-behind victory over Washington
College on Sunday afternoon.
Down 64-57 with less than 90 seconds remaining, Amherst began
a furious comeback. An Erik Kelly (Staples, MN) lay-up
made the score 64-59 with 1:20 left. After a Washington turnover,
Amherst Co-captain Chris Smith's (Swarthmore, PA) offensive
rebound and put-back pulled the Jeffs within three, 64-61 with
1:03 to go. Two free throws by Washington junior guard Greg
Adams (Toms River, NJ) gave the Shoremen a 66-61 lead, but
the visitors would not score again. Amherst junior Brian Daoust
(Dover, MA) drained a three-pointer with 40.9 seconds to go,
and the Jeffs then fouled Adams, who last season turned in the
seventh highest free-throw percentage in Division III history.
However, Adams missed the front end of the one-and-one and freshman
guard Ryan Faulkner (Lebanon, NH) pushed the ball upcourt
to Smith for an easy lay-in to tie the game. The Shoremen had
a chance to win the game on their ensuing possession, but senior
captain Steve DeVore (Hagerstown, MD) had his jumper blocked
by Quattlebaum with 4.1 seconds remaining. Amherst senior Jackson
Collins (Brooklyn, NY) pounced on the rebound and lofted a
long pass to Quattlebaum, who was fouled by Washington junior
Alhamisi Simms (Annapolis, MD) as time expired.
Chris Smith led Amherst with a career-high 23 points to go along
with 12 boards, while Kelly added 20 points and Collins had 10
points and 12 rebounds. Adams led five Washington players in
double-figures with 15 points. The Jeffs go to 6-3 with the win,
while Washington drops to 4-7.
Amherst next plays at Wesleyan University on Wednesday night,
while Washington also plays Wednesday at home against Johns Hopkins
University.
