HENNIKER, N.H. -- On primary day
in New Hampshire, visiting Amherst College went to the long-distance
polls, connecting for a season high 12 three-pointers en route
to a 27-point rout of the host New England College Pilgrims in
non-conference Division III action on Tuesday.
With senior Co-captain Naomi Sullivan (Hudson,
MA) and freshman forward Sarah Walker (West Hartford, CT)
saddled with early fouls, the Pilgrims stayed in the game through
the first 10 minutes of the opening half, behind the scoring duo
of senior Alissa Pashko (Henniker, NH) and junior Holly
Pendleton (Bristol, ME). Sullivan and Walker, the Jeffs' two
leading scorers entering the game, spent the final 13:10 of the
first half on the bench, exiting with the Pilgrims up 16-13.
But after exchanging baskets for the next 90
seconds, the Jeffs went on a 21-4 run, including five consecutive
three-pointers. Three of the long distance bombs came from freshman
Sally Hamill (Scituate, MA), while sophomore Hallison
Putnam (Lexington, KY) drained two of her own. Junior forward
Charlotte Taylor (Harvard, MA) converted a three-point
play to put the Jeffs up 45-26, and the visitors took a 45-27
lead to the locker room, outscoring NEC 27-7 during the final
9:50 of the half. Despite the pair of Sullivan and Walker combining
for only two first-half points, the Jeffs put up their highest
first-half point total of the season behind eight of 15 shooting
from behind the three-point line, with Putnam and Taylor each
in double figures at halftime with 10 and 13 points, respectively.
The Pilgrims scored the first two baskets of
the second half to cut the Amherst lead to 45-31, before Sullivan
finally exploded. The NESCAC's leading scorer accounted for her
first 11 points of the game during a game-breaking 14-0 run, and
the Pilgrims would never get closer than 21 points after the Jeffs
went up 59-31 just inside the 14-minute mark.
The visitors added a four of seven performance
from behind the three-point arc in the second half to finish 12-22
for the game, as seven different Amherst players connected from
long range. Sullivan finished with 13 points, all in the second
half, while Taylor finished with a career-high 13 points to go
along with seven rebounds, despite going scoreless in the second
period. Hamill finished with 12 points on a career-high four three-pointers,
and Putnam finished with 10 to round out four Jeffs in double
figures. The Jeffs finished with their best shooting performance
of the season, finishing the game 31-60 (51.7 percent), as every
Amherst player who dressed scored.
For the hosts, Pashko finished with 17 points
on four of 14 shooting, and Pendleton finished with 18 points,
including a seven for 10 effort from the field. Junior forward
Renee Hellert (Westerly, RI) finished with 12 points and
13 rebounds, as the Pilgrims outrebounded the Jeffs 39-29 in the
loss.
With the win over NEC, the Jeffs finish the non-conference portion
of their schedule, improving to 11-5 with their seventh win in
eight games. Up next for the squad is Friday afternoon's showdown
with arch-rival Williams College, a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in Williams'
Chandler Gymnasium. The Jeffs defeated the Ephs, 53-50, in Amherst
on January 15.
