Falls To Wellesley
- Shooting Woes Plague Jeffs
In 62-35 Loss
- AMHERST, Mass. - Behind 48% shooting from the field,
the Wellesley College women's basketball team cruised past host
Amherst College on Thursday night, opening up a 14-point halftime
lead and never looking back en route to a 27-point victory.
Leading the way for visiting Wellesley was junior forward Shani
Delaney (San Francisco, CA), who posted a game-high 15 points
on five of eight shooting, including a 3-3 performance from behind
the three-point line. The Blue finished 7-14 from downtown for
the game, including five of nine in a first-half which saw them
open up a big lead against the poor-shooting Jeffs, who finished
15 of 56 (26.8%) from the field for the game.
Sisters Amy and Meg Barao (Norwell, MA) combined for 19 points
and 17 rebounds for Wellesley, while sophomore forward Jane Gooding
also finished in double figures for the Blue, with 10 points
for the game. Besides outshooting the Jeffs, Wellesley also held
a decided advantage on the boards, out-rebounding Amherst 45-26
for the game.
For host Amherst, freshman forward Sarah Walker (W. Hartford,
CT) was the lone player to finish in double figures, posting
10 points to go along with her team-high seven rebounds. The
Jeffs could not buy a basket, shooting 1-10 from behind the three-point
line, and seven for 27 from the field in the second half, as
they were held to their lowest output of the season.
The Jeffs, who drop to 4-3 with the loss, are next in action
Saturday afternoon at Clark University, their last game before
winter break.
