Football Claims Sixth Win To Set Up Battle of the Unbeatens

With a 31-12 win over Tufts, Amherst set up a battle of the unbeatens for this upcoming weekend. Facing 6-0 Trinity on Saturday, Amherst hopes to preserve its best start since their undefeated season of 1984.

Todd Haggerty '98 (Albany, NY) caught 7 of 9 Rich Willard '98 (Johnstown, NY) completions for 139-yards and the opening touchdown against the Jumbos. Haggerty has claimed for the season 350-yards in 19 catches, the most of any Jeff receiver. With Haggertyıs fifth catch, Willard surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He has already thrown eight touchdown passes with a 62.3% completion rate to lead the NESCAC.

The Jeffs jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead behind the sharp passing of Willard and the ground-game of five running backs. Tri-Captain Josh Mason '97 (Greenfield, MA) led all rushers with 22 carries and 90 hard-fought yards, while Bob DiSabato '99 (Westwood, MA) continued his rushing rampage, scoring his fifth and sixth touchdowns of the season. He has a total of 90 carries for 373 yards to lead the running backs.

Despite a tenacious Tufts defense, Amherst ran three touchdowns and a field goal past the Jumbos. Quarterback Dan Morse generated the Tufts offense as he rushed for 70 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown run. Also throwing a 14-yard touchdown, Morse was under attack by the Amherst defense. Breaking up seven of 19 attempts, the Jeff defense registered three sacks and two fumble recoveries to keep control of their Family Weekend game.

Seth Zimmerman '98 (Lewistown, PA) and Alex Bernstein '97 (Edina, MA) again led the Amherst defense which still holds league bests in yards allowed (1,034) and points allowed (41). Zimmerman had 9 tackles (5 solo) and a 2-yard fumble recovery, while the Pre-Season All-American registered 11 hits (4 solo), a pass break up and assisted a sack.

While the young but talented Tufts team falls to 1-5, Amherst climbs to a 6-0 record for the first time in 12 years. Facing the only other undefeated NESCAC team in Hartford on Saturday, Amherst prepares for what promises to be an exciting day of football. "We're both 6-0, and you donıt get opportunities like that often," commented Head Coach Jack Siedlecki. "It's got to be a great week of preparation and game plans and staying focused in practice. It's a pretty even game, but once we come into the game, we're going to have to just let them play."

Men's Soccer Splits Games with New England's Best

For the second time in two weeks, the Jeffs upset a top-10 ranked team in New England. Last week No. 2 Wheaton fell to Amherst, and this week it was No. 5 Babson. The Beavers were charged with a handball to set up a penalty kick for the Jeffs. Tim Christian '98 (Agawam, MA) scored his second goal of the season for the 1-0 win, the fourth shutout this season for goalie Kevin Larner '99 (Short Hills, NJ).

However, facing No. 7 Tufts at Amherstıs Family Weekend, the Jeffs weren't quite so lucky. Amherst fell 3-2 in overtime to the 11th goal of NESCAC Player of the Week Chris Vriavas. However, they put up a strong fight, scoring an equalizer 39 seconds after Tufts went up 1-0 early in the second half. Co-Captain Rejji Hayes '97 (Andover, MA) slotted a pass from Christian into the lower left corner before rookie Gary Kegal '00 (Woodway, WA) sent a floater over the defense to give Amherst a 2-1 lead with 30 minutes to play. But Vriavas countered 11 seconds later to push the match into overtime. Larner had 14 saves for the day.

Women's Soccer Rises to No. 2

With a win and a tie this week, the Jeffs pass rival Bowdoin to reclaim the No. 2 spot in the New England Division III Poll. A 6-0 rout of Nichols propelled Amherst upwards until a grueling 0-0 overtime tie with Tufts stopped their ascent.

Just days after she was named the NESCAC Player of the Week, Shaunette Richards '98 (Mays Landing, NJ) sparked the Amherst offense with her two goals and an assist against Nichols. Richards takes over as the teamıs leading scorer with seven goals and three assists, followed closely by Katie Hersey '99 (Westford, MA), who has registered six goals and five assists. Katie Connelly '00 (East Granby, CT) scored her sixth goal of her rookie season before turning in her field uniform for keeperıs gloves. She also had two saves against the Lady Bison.

However, this lethal offensive pair could not sneak anything past Tufts before a packed Family Weekend crowd. Though the teams combined for 42 shots, both goalies stood their ground for 120 minutes. Sarah Fabian '98 (Dalton, MA) has allowed only four goals for an amazing 94.3% save percentage 13 games into the season.

Field Hockey Wins Little III Title

The game took five days to complete, but finally the Little III title was decided. Because of excessively soggy field conditions last Saturday, the Wesleyan matchup was suspended after regulation and slated to continue in sudden death last Wednesday. Through two 15-minute periods the teams battled, pushing the contest into penalty strokes to decide the victor. Alie Stechenberg '00 (Longmeadow, MA), Jen Corso '99 (Collingswood, NJ) and Irene Permut '99 (Wilmington, DE) eluded the goalie with their strokes, but were matched by three Cardinal scores to re-tie the match. Entering round two of strokes, Corso and Marnie Huffman-Green '99 (Chevy Chase, MD) connected with the cage before the last Cardinal stepped to the line. Hit. Save by Jess Rich '99 (Stillwater, NY), for her seventh shutout. With wins over both Williams and Wesleyan, Amherst claimed the 1996 Little III title.

But this elation lasted only a few days before the Jeffs fell to Tufts. Though they took nine shots inside the circle, none would enter the box for them. Rich made 12 saves before letting in only her sixth goal of the season.

The Jeffs face top ranked and undefeated Trinity at home on Halloween.

 Women's Tennis Wins New Englands

With Co-Captain Ting Yu '97 (Pittsburgh, PA), Neely Steinberg '99 (Concord, MA) and Sam Toerge '99 (Potomac, MD) winning their singles flights, Amherst claimed its third title in four years at the New England Womenıs Intercollegiate Division III Tennis Tournament. Last year, the Jeffs tied Williams for first place, but Amherst claimed the top spot for themselves in 1996, edging out second place Williams by seven points.

Eight of the nine Amherst entries claimed the No. 1 seed in their respective flights. Pam Diamond '99 (Trumbull, CT) won two matches before falling to the eventual runner-up in the semifinals of No. 1 singles. Playing at No. 2 singles, Laura Keith '99 (Wayzata, MN) lost in the semifinals, as did the No. 2 seeded doubles team of Co-Captain Susanne Santola '97 (Summit, NJ) and Toerge in third-flight doubles.

Ascending to the finals before succumbing to the eventual champion were No. 5 singles Santola and the No. 1 doubles team of Keith and Yu. However, Diamond and Steinberg combined for a 4-0 record in second-flight doubles for the title.

Women's Volleyball Claims Second Player of the Week

Last week, Kristin Edgar '99 (Colorado Springs, CO) claimed this NESCAC honor, and this week Co-Captain Laura Becvar '97 (El Paso, TX) garnered the title for her 42 kills and 38 blocks in five matches at the Hall of Fame Tournament. Averaging 2.1 kills per game with a hitting percentage of .397, Becvar was one of only six players from 16 teams named to the All-Tournament team.

The Hall of Fame drew eight of the top ten teams in New England. The Jeffs compiled a 3-2 record for the weekend, defeating Bates and Mount Holyoke for the second time, and beating Wheaton for the first. However, Amherst fell in three to Springfield and won the first two games against Wellesley before dropping the last three in a sixth place showing.
