AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Jeremy Long (Woburn, MA) popped a penalty kick past keeper Kevin Larner (Short Hills, NJ) to lift second-ranked Wheaton over Amherst, the No. 1 team in New England. The Jeffs had been called for their 26th foul in the 79th minute to set up the Lyon game-winner.
Wheaton took an early 1-0 lead on a restart nine minutes into play. Sophomore Brent Carlson (North Kingstown, RI) lobbed a ball over the Jeff defense onto the head of Long and then into the net. But Amherst equalized midway through the first period with a drive up the left side of the field. Andy Kay (North Easton, MA) pushed past both his defender and the net-minder for the seventh goal of his sophomore season. The teams broke at the half tied at one goal a piece.
Wheaton betters its record to 8-3 while it hands Amherst the Jeffs' first loss of the season. Falling to 7-1-1, Amherst will host Little III rival Wesleyan at 11:00am on Saturday in a Homecoming showdown.
