Men's Basketball Tops In New England

Playing three of the top-ten teams in New England last week, the Jeffs registered a 2-1 record and claimed the No.1 spot in New England poll conducted by Columbus Multimedia. Ranked as the No. 11 team in the nation, Amherst currently boasts an 11-2 record and one of this week's NESCAC Co-Players of the Week, John Pavelski '98 (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ).

Also recognized by the ECAC Honor Roll, Pavelski averaged 25.3 ppg while shooting 53.1% from the field and 44.4% from long range for eight of his 35 3-pointers this season. He matched his career high of 31-points against Colby, while also maintaining Amherst defensive pressure with his six steals and two blocks. Pavelski is the team's second leading scorer wjth 19.1 ppg and second leading rebounder with 6.2 rpg.

The junior paired up with senior tri-captain Jamal Wilson (East Orange, NJ) for 25-points a piece in an 87-85 squeaker at Connecticut College. The Jeffs went on a 14-0 run late in the first half to push their halftime lead to 18. Amherst stayed about 20-up on the Camels throughout the second half until four minutes left to play. Conn held Amherst scoreless for over three minutes while the Camels added 10-points to cut the lead to six. In the final minute (that took 20 to play), the Jeffs were outscored 10-4, but junior Julian Rowand (Washington, DC) made the back-end of a two-shot foul to push the Amherst lead to 2 and force a three-point attempt.

Against Bowdoin, the Jeffs shot close to 50% throughout the game while holding the Bears to 36% from the floor. Rookie Hugh Quattlebaum '00 (Andover, MA) gave a phenomenal performance, shooting 6-7 from the floor for a career high 13 points in just 16 minutes on the floor. Quattlebaum sparked the 17-0 run over a five minute span in the second half to pull away from the Bears toward an 84-67 victory. This was the eleventh straight win by the Jeffs.

However, that streak was snapped the next day against Colby. The Mules jumped out to a nine-point lead at the half by hitting over half their shots while Amherst could get only a third of theirs to fall. But the Jeffs stayed in the game with a 10-0 run in the second half before senior tri-captain Chris Akers '97 (Washington, DC) was saddled with two more questionable fouls. Less than two minutes later, Wilson was slapped with foul number four as the Jeffs found themselves in foul trouble for the remainder of the game. In the last ten minutes, the Mules went to the line 22 times and made all but two shots. Meanwhile, Pavelski attempted to jump-start the game, scoring 10 of his 31 in that span. At the final buzzer, Colby handed Amherst only its second loss of the season, 67-81.

Women's Basketball Posts 2-1 Record for Week

The Jeffs rebounded from a ten-point loss to Williams last week for two wins and a buzzer-beating loss over Connecticut College, Springfield and Clark. For her 18.0-points-per-game and 10.6-rebounds-per-game, Kathryn Hersey '99 (Westford, MA) was named a NESCAC Co-Player of the Week for the second straight week and to the ECAC Honor Roll for the fourth consecutive week. She leads the team in both scoring (16.5 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg).

Hersey jumpstarted her week by rattling off the first ten points of the Conn College game to put her well on the way to a 21-point, 10-rebound performance. The Jeffs led by as much as 16 points while shooting 54.7% from the floor. Liza Feldman '00 (Lincoln, MA) shot a perfect 4-4 from the field, including 2 from behind the arc, in her career high 11-point game. Hersey and Feldman were only two of four Lord Jeffs in double figures, along with Janinne Noel '99 (Dalton, MA) and Naomi Sullivan '00 (Hudson, MA) with 13 and 10, respectively.

Two days later against Clark, junior forward Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) hit her first five shots for the Jeffs. But the Cougars sank four straight from long-range before the Jeffs fought back to a one-point halftime deficit. The teams played each other close, as neither could push a lead into double figures. A jumper from Rinaldi with 1:57 left to play gave the Jeffs a 93-92 edge before she sprained her ankle going for a rebound on the next trip down the floor. Hersey picked up the slack, driving for her 21st point of the night and a 95-92 lead. But the Cougars turned to All-American Meegan Garrity in the final 30 seconds, hitting a 3 and releasing the winning deuce with under a second left on the game-clock. Garrity finished with 37 points.

But the Jeffs would have payback against Springfield, winning 58-56 on a Sullivan shot with 4.0 seconds to play. Amherst took spent close to eight minutes stifling the Pride's offense while outscoring them 17-2. But down by nine at the half, Springfield fought back to tie the game at 39 with 9:43 left to play. A Hersey jumper would give the Jeffs the lead for good after a 12-0 run late in the game. Donna Masterson had a putback of her own shot to tie the game again at 56, but a fast-break and the Sullivan basket bettered the Jeffs record to 8-5 for the season.

Men's Swimming and Diving Win Two

With back-to-back meets against Bowdoin and Hamilton, the Jeffs finished the weekend with four convincing wins between both teams. The men's team is currently at the 5-1 mark while the women are 4-3. In both meets combined, the men took first place in all but three of the 24 events. Against Bowdoin on Friday night, the Jeffs swept all four freestyle events (50, 100, 200 and 500) and the 100 IM on the way to a 138-46 victory. The 50-butterfly proved to be a shock to observers watching Flori Fischetti '99 (Potomac, MD) pass butterfly ace Andrew Grossman '99 (Chappaqua, NY) for the win from lane 6 (in a six lane pool). Four events later, Bryan Luke '97 (Honolulu, HI) broke the 28 second mark for the first time in season in the 50 breaststroke with a first place finish. The men continued their dominance against Hamilton the following day with a 167-76 win. Divers Matt Smith '99 (North Bridgton, ME), Joe Schneider '97 (Delmar, NY) and Dan Fernandez '97 (Tampa, FL) swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

Women's Swimming and Diving Re-Write the Record Books

Kerry Weeks '98 (Longmeadow, MA) broke four records in two meets over the weekend to lead the Jeffs to two wins and a 4-3 record. Against Bowdoin she broke the seven-year old record in the 100 IM, clocking a 1:01.81. The following day, Weeks led off two relay teams who would also shatter pool records. Weeks, Sarah Lukaska '99 (Edina, MN), Deny Soto '00 (New Haven, CT) and Sarah Moran '00 (Bristol, TN) teamed up in the 400 medley relay for a 4:08.13 performance, almost two seconds faster than the former record set in 1993. Weeks, Lukaska and Moran then closed out the meet with Sondra Fein '00 (Potomac, MD) in the 400 free relay to close out the meet with a time of 3:40.76, over two seconds faster than the record set in 1994 by a Williams relay. This finale was also fast enough to shatter the Amherst varsity record and make an NCAA B-cut.

Co-Captain Becky Watson '97 (Hamel, MN) also qualified for her second straight appearance at Nationals with 258.97 points on the 3-meter board. Watson, Tamara Ball '99 (Des Peres, MO) and Lauren Leibsohn '97 (Mission Hills, KS) swept both boards to propel the Jeffs to a 163-80 victory over the Continentals. Amherst also swept the 200 IM with Moran, Kristin Olson '00 (Los Angeles, CA) and Fein coming in at 1-2-3, respectively., before Weeks and Soto took 1-2 in the 200 butterfly.
