Men's Basketball Rebounds with Two More WinsRising to No. 3 in the NCAA Northeast polls, Amherst rebounded from a weekend loss to Colby by defeating Babson 90-76. Wilson scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half as Amherst shot well over 50% for the game. Forward Billy Skorupski '98 (Hatfield, MA) added 20-points in a career-best performance. Amherst boasted five players in double-figures, including the 5-5 shooting of Tri-Captain Chris Akers '97 (Washington, DC).
Returning home, the Jeffs prepared to face fourth-ranked Hamilton, a team that had appeared in the last two NCAA tournaments. Amherst mounted a 10-0 midway through the first half to claim a 7-point lead, one they maintained with the three-point shooting prowess of Wilson, Julian Rowand '98 (Washington, DC) and Tri-Captain George Charles '97 (Tampa, FL). But Hamilton forced five Jeff fouls in the closing minutes of the half to pull within three at halftime.
Wilson opened up the second half with an alley-oop from Charles before junior John Pavelski (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) swished two 3's to extend the Jeff lead to 11. Combined, Wilson and Pavelski had 38 of the team's 53 second half points. Hamilton took advantage of the double-bonus and Amherst's 17 second-half fouls to keep the game close, pulling within three on a jumper by Kevin Larson. But Pavelski's fourth of five 3's that helped Amherst pull away for the last time with three minutes to play. For the game, Amherst hit 17-31 from long range and 22-28 from the line to earn their 13th win of the season.

Committing a season-low nine turnovers, the Jeffs forced 23 and registered three blocks for the night. Hersey contributed yet another double-double, her sixth of the season, with 11-points and 10-rebounds.
Kate Sullivan had a repeat performance at Tufts two days later with 5 steals and 6 assists in a 72-61 win. She leads the team with 2.8 apg and is tied with Hersey and Noel with 1.8 steals per game. Shooting a mere 29.4% in the first half, the Jeffs rebounded from a 32-25 halftime deficit to outscore the Jumbos 47-29 in the second with 21-34 (61.8%) shooting. Offensively, Naomi Sullivan put up career numbers with 18-points and 15-rebounds to complement fellow forward Sarah Rinaldi's (Washington, DC) 16-point, 10-rebound performance. Down 2-0 to Bowdoin early in the second period, Amherst scored four goals in an 11-minute span to take a 4-3 lead into the final 20 minutes. A shorthanded goal by Charlie Blyth '99 (Beaconsfield, Quebec) put the Jeffs up halfway through the period after the Bears had equalized at 4 goals apiece. But Bowdoin answered with eight minutes of offensive intensity, netting three more goals to snap the Jeffs' win-streak.
Amherst faced another tough team in yet another close decision the following day against Colby. Amherst maintained a one-goal lead until the final minute of regulation when Terry Flynn netted a Mule goal to send the game into extra time. Feeding off of the momentum from Flynn's goal, Colby ended the game just 26 seconds into overtime on Nick Lamia's second goal of the night. Senior co-captain Joe Branca (Medford, MA) made 37 saves against each of the Bears and the Mules.

The following day Amherst faced Middlebury, the top-ranked team in the Alliance with a perfect 12-0 league record. While the Panthers may have scored 10 goals, the Jeffs returned home with the satisfaction of scoring two goals against them. Junior tri-captain Jess Frisch (Bethesda, MD) snuck her 13th and 14th goals of the season past the Panther defense, a unit that has allowed only five goals all year. Frisch, the team's leading scorer, had been recognized in the ECAC Alliance Honor Roll a week earlier for her hattrick and two assists against Holy Cross.

Co-captain Jeff Barnes '97 (West Lafayette, IN) overcame illness and injury in the 400 IM to win with a time of 4:19.32. Matt Smith '99 (North Bridgton, ME) qualified for Nationals on both 1-meter and 3-meter boards, while teammates Joe Schneider '97 (Delmar, NY) and Dan Fernandez '97 (Tampa, FL) followed close behind to sweep both diving events. Josh Oberwetter '00 (Washington Depot, CT) continued swimming well, winning the 200 backstroke in a sub-2 minute effort of 1:59.84. Despite an illness, Grossman continued to be a force in the butterfly events, beating his opponents in the 100 by nearly 3 seconds with a time of :53.62. Lahey later went on to break Luke's pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:00.47, before easily clocking a 2:13.57 in the 200 for the win. However, Luke answered back in the 50 freestyle, edging out co-captains Barnes and Peter Grossi '97 (McLean, VA).
Against Wesleyan, Weeks continued to be unbeatable, as she broke two more records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:08.88 and 2:29.62, respectively. The junior's times in both events, as well as her 4:39.99 in the 400 IM, were B-cuts for Nationals, even faster than the times she had swum the first time she clocked times faster than qualifying times. The 800 freestyle relay of Moran, Kristin Olson '00 (Los Angeles, CA), Elise Deriel '99 (Havertown, PA), and co-captain Katrin Stuehmeier '97 (Fair Haven, NJ) broke the pool record by almost nine seconds with a time of 8:06.85. Sprinters Katherine Poulin '00 (St. Davids, PA) and Deny Soto '00 (New Haven, CT) easily came in first and second in the 50 freestyle with times of :25.82 and :25.83, respectively. Soto continued her sprinting abilities in the 100 butterfly, winning with a time of 1:01.52. Divers co-captain Becky Watson '97 (Hamel, MN), Tamara Ball '99 (Des Peres, MO), Lauren Leibsohn '97 (Mission Hills, KS) and Jenny Mutterperl '00 (Bethesda, MD) continue to improve, getting ready for New Englands and Nationals.

Even though they came home with two losses from a weekend in Vermont, women's ice hockey considers the weekend a success just short of victories. Facing Vermont on Saturday, the Jeffs cashed in on their young offensive potential as Brittany Evans '99 (Avon, CT) scored her first of two goals to give the Jeffs an early lead. Down 3-1 in the third, Evans struck again with four minutes to play as the Jeffs locked in the offense in the Vermont end. Amherst forced the Catamount goalie to make 10 of her 19 saves in the third period, but a third shot couldn't find its way to the net before the end of regulation.
