Baseball Posts 2-2 WeekThe Jeffs rallied, however, at Westfield state as Amherst posted a 10-run 7th inning off six of the Owls' nine errors for the game. A two-run homer by Berchelmann had tied the game 5-5 in the top of the 6th, and a run by Jordan Krall (Encino, CA) put the Jeffs up 6-5 before the Amherst onslaught in the 7th. Quattlebaum led off the inning by claiming 1st after interference by the catcher, and Amherst had already scrolled through the lineup before the first out was made. Junior Mike Grant (Mendon, MA) scored two of his four runs in the 7th as he went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Andy Ditchfield (Lebanon, NH) earned the win after six innings of work where he struck out four. Rookie Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) closed out the game, fanning five of his 12 batters faced and allowing only one hit in the final three innings.
Traveling to Wesleyan for a weekend doubleheader, Amherst dropped game one 7-2 after a six-run 2nd inning for the Cardinals. The Jeffs posted their runs in the 4th as Krall posted an RBI single to score Berchelmann, and the rookie shortstop came home himself on a triple by senior co-captain Dan Blednick (Melville, NY). Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead after four innings in game two, but Amherst responded with a five-run 5th where the Jeffs posted three of their five hits, capped by a three-run homer by Grant. This is the first collegiate home run for the junior second-baseman. Senior Jon Cross (Chevy Chase, MD) earned the complete-game win.

The team competed in the Jumbo Invitational over the weekend and finished second in the four-team pool. The Jeffs earned a top-seeding for the second day of the tournament after defeating three opponents by a combined score of 24-3. Amherst first avenged a spring training loss to Tufts with a 10-1 victory over the hosts. Sophomore Melissa Roja (Los Altos Hills, CA) scored three runs on two walks and a fielders choice, and rookie catcher Meghan Nelson (Middletown, CT) went 2-for-3 with four RBI on a pair of singles.
Later that afternoon, the Jeffs posted 10 hits in a 5-1 win over Curry as Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases. Senior co-captain Jen Shea (Hatfield, MA) struck out three in her first of two wins on Saturday, along with a 9-1 defeat of Colby to close out the day. Amherst's first four batters registered hits and would score in the 1st inning, and the Jeffs added five more runs in the 4th.
Amherst found itself trailing Curry 3-2 after four innings to start Sunday's competition. But a Colonel error put pinch-runner Shari Sakamoto (South Pasadena, CA) on first, and a line-drive to centerfield by Schwarting in the bottom of the 6th turned into a four-base error as both Jeffs would score for a 4-3 win and a place in the Championship game against Tufts. The Jumbos took a 6-0 lead after four, though Amherst rallied with four runs in the 5th. Sophomore first-baseman Darcy Sweeney (Keene, NH) went 2-for-2 in the 6-4 loss where Schwarting struck out six Jumbos.
Both Bullard and Nichols would notch three goals in a 15-11 loss at Bowdoin, where the Jeffs trailed by as much as 10-2 late in the second quarter. Amherst cut the lead to 12-8 after three periods as they forced the Polar Bear keeper to make 21 saves. Rookie goalie Corey Simonson (Brookline, MA) made eight saves as he squared off against his identical twin brother Wendell, a starting midfielder for Bowdoin.
All six singles flights earned byes in the first round of NESCACs, and Amherst advanced at least as far as the semifinals in all nine draws. Junior Harlan Stock (West Hartford, CT) and senior co-captain Noah Lippe-Klein (Palo Alto, CA) both avenged earlier losses to Middlebury and Tufts, respectively, as Segal, Lippe-Klein and Chase all advanced to the Championship match before falling to their Eph rivals.
Rob Mitchell (Worcester, VT) posted a pair of victories as the junior successfully defended his 1500 title and won the 5000. Amherst packed the distance events as Dan Chandler (Selkirk, NY), Aaron Beim (Princeton, NJ) and Chris Thunen (Briarcliff Manor, NY) claimed 2-6-8 in the 10000, and Bruce Perlow (Hubbard Woods, IL) and Erick Hung (Orinda, CA) took 3rd and 7th in the 800, respectively. Sophomore Jeff Willis (Kobe, Japan) earned a pair of third-place finishes in the 400 and 400 hurdles, while senior co-captain Rob Schur (West Milford, NJ) claimed fifth in the shot put. The Distance Medley Relay also defended its NESCAC title, claiming the championship with a 10:29.70 clocking.

Amherst softball closed out a 13-game win streak as the No. 5 team in New England as the Jeffs posted a 6-1 record for the week. The team first faced Clark, who had knocked Amherst out of its first-ever post-season appearance in the ECAC Tournament last year with a 2-1 decision. The Jeffs, however, took a 1-0 lead on the Cougars with the fourth home run of the season for sophomore Liza Feldman (Sudbury, MA) in the 2nd, and pitcher Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA) made it 2-0 when she scored on a overthrow after she tripled in the bottom of the 5th. Amherst added three more runs in the sixth off four Cougar errors toward a 5-1 victory. Three days later, Vicki Gonzalez (Miami, FL) stole home in the 1st inning for a 1-0 Amherst win at Westfield State. Schwarting struck out six from the mound.

Facing two of the top teams in the nation, Amherst men's lacrosse suffered a pair of losses for the week as they prepare for their final regular season game this weekend. Traveling to Connecticut College, who had knocked the Jeffs out of the ECAC Tournament last year, Amherst rallied in the final seven minutes to tie the match at 9-9 and force a sudden death overtime period. Sophomore Sam Altman (Owing Mills, MD) kicked off the surge, and junior Payson Bullard (Wilton, CT) pulled the Jeffs within one with 1:05 to play. Fellow quad-captain Todd Nichols (Skaneateles, NY) notched the equalizer 15 seconds later to force overtime.

Holding steady as the No. 10 team in the country, women's lacrosse posted a 16-7 victory over Wellesley as Amherst rattled off five goals in the first five minutes of play. Nine players contributed to the victory, led by four goals and an assist by senior co-captain Heather Kestner (Wilmington, DE). Fellow captain Heidi Cline (Andover, MA) and sophomore Katherine Poulin (St. Davids, PA) each tacked on three goals and an assist for Amherst.
Hosting fifth-ranked Trinity, Amherst rallied from as much as a 6-1 deficit early in the game toward a 13-12 loss to the Bantams. Amherst used three three-goal rallies to chip away at the Bantam lead, keeping them within two at the half, 8-6. Down 10-6 ten minutes into the second period, Cline sparked a run with a behind-the-back sidearm shot that cut the deficit to 10-7. Cline's third score pulled Amherst within one, 10-9, when Trinity mounted a three-goal surge of its own. With 5:12 on the game clock, Poulin tallied her lone goal of the game, and Kestner notched her fifth goal just 18 seconds later for a 13-11 deficit. The midfielder's sixth goal matched Kestner's career high and closed out Amherst scoring.

After spending a week competing at Williams, men's tennis closed out its regular season with a 6-1 victory over MIT to secure a spot in the four-team NCAA Regional Championship. The team had begun the week with a 6-1 loss to Williams, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation. Sophomore Scott Chase (North Andover, MA) posted a pair of wins over the Ephs to earn him the top seed in the NESCAC Championships in No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles with partner Reeve Segal (Newton, MA).

After closing out the regular season with a 6-3 victory over Smith, Amherst women's tennis prepares for its fourth-straight appearance at the NCAA Team Championships, to be held at Washington & Lee University from May 5-8. Jamie Cohen (Rye, NY) and Pam Diamond (Trumbull, CT) have also qualified for Individual Nationals, while Diamond will also team up with fellow junior Neely Steinberg (Concord, MA) in doubles competition. The Individual Championships will be played the three days following the team championships.

Amherst outdoor track and field made their best showing ever at the NESCAC Championships as the men finished 4th out of 11 teams (97 points), and the women claimed 5th with 61 points. The women were led by sophomore Nicole Campbell (Brooklyn, NY), who took 1-2-3 in the triple jump, long jump and 100 meters, respectively, and senior co-captain Rachael Holloway (Lake Oswego, OR), who won the 400 with a 59.26 performance. Junior Anne Bertkau (Wilton, CT) claimed second in the 400 hurdles after shattering her own school record last week.

Women's golf hosted the Northeast Intercollegiate Championship and finished 10th overall in a field of predominantly Division I squads. Senior Tyfoon Chakkaphak (Bangkok, Thailand) led the squad with a 33rd place finish. Earlier in the week, the men had competed at Worcester State, where Amherst claimed second-place honors, including a medalist finish by senior co-captain Erik Hardenbergh (Wayland, MA), shooting a 73 for the day. Sophomore Joe Graceffa (Augusta, ME) finished third with a 77.
